GLENDIVE - Gene Hansen, age 70, passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2012, at Glendive Medical Center in Glendive. Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. and from 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday, July 9, at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Funeral Services with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10, at Zion Lutheran Church in Glendive with Pastor Avis Anderson officiating. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Gene was born on Oct. 11, 1941, in Williston, N.D., a son of Alfred and Margaret (Elvsaas) Hansen. He was raised in the Froid area receiving an education in Bainville, where he graduated with the class of 1959. Following graduation, Gene moved to Grand Forks, N.D., to attended college at the University of North Dakota where he pitched for the Fighting Sioux baseball team. In 1964, Gene graduated from college with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. Gene was offered a chance to try out for the major leagues until he was drafted on Dec. 21, 1965, into the United States Army. He was honorably discharged from military service on July 1, 1967. After Gene was discharged from service he moved to Wolf Point and taught school for one year before moving to Glendive, where he had remained since.
Gene met and later married Georgina McCrory on March 22, 1970, in Williston, and to this union a son, Cory, and a daughter, Carla, were born. As a couple they raised their two children in Glendive where Gene continued teaching until his retirement in 2007.
Gene was an avid fan of the Dodgers; he thoroughly enjoyed working in his shop and teaching. Spending time with his family and grandchildren were things he cherished along with visiting. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #1324 and he was Class A Chairman of the American Legion Baseball club. Gene will be missed by all.
Gene was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Hansen, and brother Allen Hansen.
Survivors include his wife, Georgina Hansen of Glendive; son, Cory (Rona) Hansen of Billings; daughter, Carla (Jason) Bright of Sidney; granddaughter, Pier Hansen; grandson, Bodee Bright; mother, Margaret Hansen of Plentywood; brothers Curt Hansen of Williston, and Rick (Lanette) Hansen of Froid; sisters, Mary Veis of Billings, Nancy Hansen of Little Falls, Minn., and Melody (Kevin France) Hansen of Portland, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
