Mary Buffett Obituary
Born in Crystal Springs, Miss., to Thomas Delos Peets and Bessie Love Thompson, she is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, James Delaney Buffett, Jr., who passed in May of this year.
She leaves behind three devoted children, her son, James William Buffett (Jane) of Palm Beach, Fla.; daughters, Loraine Marie Buffett McGuane (Thomas) of McLeod, Mont., and Lucy Anne Buffett of Point Clear; nine loving grandchildren, Heather Hume Nelson, Mara Delaney Buffett, Melanie Leigh Buffett, Savannah Jane Buffett, Anne Buffett McGuane, Sarah Delaney Buffett, Cameron Marley Buffett, Thomas Francis McGuane IV and Margaret Kidder McGuane; and four precious great-grandchildren, Thomas, Charlie, Maisie and Walker James.
"Peets" went to work at Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co. in 1948, where she held various positions, including being the first-ever equal employment coordinator. She retired in 1979 as the first female assistant director of industrial relations. Following that, she fulfilled a lifelong dream of completing her college degree and graduated cum laude from University of South Alabama at age 64.
Residing on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay for the past 27 years, she delighted in gorgeous sunsets, the scent of magnolias and visits from loved ones. She also enjoyed writing poetry, the comfort of her beloved dogs and throwing a good party.
She touched the lives of everyone she met and will be missed dearly.
The family will receive friends Tuesday morning, Sept. 30, from 8 to 9 a.m. at Fairhope Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Saint Lawrence Catholic Church in Fairhope. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mercy Medical Hospice Development Office, PO Box 1090, Daphne, AL 36526, or the Mary Loraine Peets Buffett Scholarship at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Campus, 730 East Beach Blvd., Long Beach, MS 39560.
Funeral arrangements are by Fairhope Funeral Home and Crematory, 19698 Grenno Road, Fairhope.

Apirate42 and I made the roadtrip of our lives (thanks Jetblue)this
weekend to Irvine to see the final show of this tour. We are deeply
saddened to learn of Jimmy's Mother passing.
We will keep Jimmy and his family in our thought's and prayers. This has been one hard year. I can't imagine losing both parents in less
than 6 months. Those of us who have lost a parent know just how deep the grief can be. My father has been gone a year now and I still think of him everyday. Time does help, we can laugh now when we talk about Dad, it seems like not so long ago we were still crying.

Things I have learned from being a Hospice nurse....life is too short, and we should live each day to the fullest. From everything I have read about Peets, she did! What an amazing woman, and wonderful Mother! I'm sure she's looking back on her life saying..."It's been a Lovely Cruise".
Though I am sure you will miss her bodily presence, cherish the memories, celebrate her life, and take peace in knowing your parents are reunited, and smiling down on all of you!

I had the extremely good fortune to read the article that Ms. Peets wrote about Capt. J.D. Buffett and which was published in the September 1986 issue of Mobile Bay Monthly Magazine. I must say that this was a great read, a wonderful insight into Ms. Peets' mind, and a very impressive family.
