Robert Conover Obituary

BROADVIEW - Robert C. (Junior) Conover passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, surrounded by his family. Junior was fiercely loyal, used his wit and humor frequently, knew every back country road for miles around, was an avid reader of Montana history, and focused his life on serving his family and the Broadview community.

Junior was born on July 11, 1922, to Robert C. Conover, Sr. and Carrie Waldrip Conover in Billings. His first home was the former 21 Mile stagecoach stop. He later moved to the family ranch northwest of Broadview where he farmed and ranched with his father and his brothers.

Junior married his high school sweetheart, Margaret (Maggie) Mike on June 10, 1943. They were an example of love and commitment to each other, and they just celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. Their 70th anniversary party last year was not only a remarkable milestone, but an opportunity to celebrate with many friends and family.

His generous spirit was demonstrated in his support of the Broadview community. He served for many years on both the Broadview School Board and the Town Council, including several terms as the mayor. Junior also helped with startup of the local Lion's Club. He was instrumental in building the Broadview Community Center and was a regular at Senior Citizens, staying for lunch, conversation, and a good round of pinochle. He enjoyed playing cards and was always a tough opponent.

Junior and Maggie raised their three sons in town and Junior continued to farm and ranch with his brother, Max, and later on with his sons. Although no longer active in farming and ranching, one of Junior's greatest joys was still riding on a combine or touring the neighboring farms to check on the crops.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing basketball, golf, and bowling throughout his life. You could count on him to attend and cheer at every sporting event in which his children or grandchildren participated. He and his wife have continued to be a significant supporter of Broadview athletes whom they viewed as their other "kids". You would find them cheering on the sidelines of both home and away games across the state. He will be greatly missed by many people of all ages in Broadview and the surrounding areas.

Junior was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings, Max, Maurice, and Richard Conover, and Evelyn Hageman. He is survived by his devoted wife, Maggie; his sons Bob (Ann) Conover, Tom (Connie) Conover, and Steve (Cindy) Conover, five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Junior's life will be held on Sunday, June 29, at 2 p.m. at the Broadview School gym. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials go to the Broadview Community Center Trust Fund c/o Lynnette Downs, 49 Pleasant Valley Road, Molt, MT 59057 or the charity of your choice.
