Steven M. "Steve" Elliot

Steven Elliot Obituary

Steve Elliot passed away on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Aspen Meadows, due to complications from multiple sclerosis.

Steve was born in Billings, Sept. 6, 1945. He was the youngest of three sons born to Howard and Esther (Munter) Elliot. He attended Poly Drive Elementary, Lewis and Clark Middle School and graduated from West High in 1963. Following high school, Steve spent a year at Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vt. In the fall of 1964, he enrolled at the University of Arizona, where he majored in English. While at the U of A, Steve was a proud Sigma Nu and served as president his senior year. He was also a cadet in the United States Army Reserve's Officers Training Corps and was appointed Second Lieutenant upon his graduation in the spring of 1968. He began law school in the fall of 1968 at the University of Montana and graduated in June 1971. He never missed an opportunity to say that he graduated from the best law school in the state! After graduation, Steve began his career at Norsworthy and Reger in Billings. Later, he became a partner in Wesco Resources. He spent his last working years in the family business, Elliot's Furniture Store.

While in law school, Steve met his wife of 35 years, Susan Rummel. They married in October 1972. Their son, Greg, was born in August 1980.

Sports were a big part of Steve's life, both as a spectator and as a participant. Steve's loves were skiing and golfing. He had many fond memories of time spent at their Big Sky cabin, skiing with family and friends. It was at Big Sky that he taught Greg how to ski and gave Susan lots of pointers. His golfing career began in 1954 at the age of 9. Steve was a member of the West High golf team and never forgot the year they went undefeated. He fondly remembered and loved reminiscing about the time he spent working at the Hilands Golf Club as a bag boy and later playing golf as a member of the Hilands. He spent many seasons cheering for the Arizona Wildcats and for his beloved Montana Grizzlies. However, when it came to loyalty, he was a beyond dedicated Chicago Cubs fan. When going to Chicago to see a game, he would tell everyone that he was going to "Mecca." Steve became a hockey fan when his son, Greg, started playing the sport in first grade. Little did he know then that he would be proudly watching him play for the next 17 years.

Every Wednesday, Steve looked forward to going to the Billings West Rotary Club meeting, where he would unmercifully harass the club's Bobcat faithful. He was honored to be named Rotarian of the Year in 1992.

Steve is survived by his wife, Susan; and their son, Greg; two brothers, Bill of Buffalo, Wyo., and Bruce (Margrit) of LaConner, Wash.; nephews Porter Elliot of Bozeman, and Lewis Elliot and Blair Elliot of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and niece, Julie Elliot. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard, and his mother, Esther.

When people think of Steve, they will undoubtedly remember, some more fondly than others, his irreverent sense of humor. But it was that characteristic that helped Steve to persevere with courage and dignity throughout the 32 years of health challenges that he endured.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Steve was instrumental and enthusiastic in working with his law class to establish a scholarship in honor of their Dean. Should friends desire, memorial gifts may be made payable to The University of Montana Foundation and noted for the Class of 1971 Dean Robert E. Sullivan Scholarship in memory of Steve Elliot. Checks should be mailed to the UM Foundation, PO Box 7159, Missoula, MT 59807-7159, or call 1-800-443-2593 to make a credit card donation by phone in Steve's memory.

Susan and Greg, My sister, Kari, who lives in Polson, called today and told me of Steve's death. I was so sorry to hear this news. I remember Steve fondly; he was such a funny man and showed such courage during his many years of illness. He was always such fun though often irreverent. I will always remember working for him at Norsworthy and Reger and then at Wesco Resources. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both and your families. Deb & Bob

Susan and Greg
I have many fond memories of Steve and his great sense of humor. When we were seniors, I was the only girl in Steve's physics class and he and I were assigned to sit in a dark closet for a few minutes until we could see some tiny, sparkling particles. You can imagine the fun Steve had--making comments the whole time.
From when I moved to Billings in 4th grade, Steve has been a friend . It won't be as much fun in this world without Steve--as we all know.
Much love to you. Steve was a valiant, good man. He was so proud of you two. I'm sorry I cannot be in Billings for the service; I will call in April when I am there. Love from Kent, also.

Who could possibly not be influenced by Steve! The memories of law school predominate since i heard of his passing. Yes, nobody wanted to get a "deltoid" grade.A "hook" or a "hook minus" was realy good. And, who could forget the occasions when EEEliot would, crusing the cribs, convince some of us to a game of Pitch.I had the opprotunity to play golf only a couple of times with Steve--the last being when he, I and Bill played Lake Hills. God, could both of the brothers hit a golf ball--I was yards behind..Yes, he was the consumate Grizz fan. When we were is law school, we would bet on the Cat-Griz game. Of course, being the Cat fan that I am, when,in my our senior year, I lost and paid paid him our $5 bet with quarters in a jar of honey. We continued to bet and, obviously, it took several years until he had to pay me.
Steve was a super person, regardless of what he had to face---his disease only inceased the admiration that everyone had for him.
My thoughts go out to all who knew him, my classmates for whom Steve was really special and Susan and the children and relatives.Steve, where you are now, you can contiue to hit those 300-yard drives, and,as far as our law class is concerned, you were realy a rock that kept us together.
Obviously, all thoguhts go out to Susan and Steve's descendants. May you always remember Steve as I do and as, I believe, the members of his class do.

Hi Susan and Greg. I worked at Aspen Meadows taking care of Steve. He was a good man to be around. Outgoing, funny, and he always had us on the tip of our toes. There was not one day that went by that he didn't make at least one person laugh. I'm truly sorry for your loss and I was glad to have taken care of him. You both are in my prayers. Didn't Steve set a high school golf record breaking 70 at the Hilands Club? I think Bill and Dick Nelson were right around par at the same tournament
My favorite Steve Elliot raz was to wear my Cardinal hat to his house. That would set him to ranting about the worst trade in baseball history; Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio!
What I like most about Steve is that he was always excited to see me.

I ,too, met Steve through Rotary and although I didn't realize that he was a fellow Arizona Wildcat, I immediately picked up on his sense of humor. It was clear that Steve's spirit was strong despite his physical adversity and there was genuine respect and affection for him among his Rotary mates.
