Alvin Scherr was born to Wendelin and Christine (Weigel) Scherr on Nov. 13, 1928, in Hague. He was one of 14 children born to Christine and Wendelin. Alvin developed a deep love for horses at a very young age. Even the day before he passed he shared fond memories of how his father would unharness the workhorses and put Alvin on their backs when he took them for water.
Alvin did his civic duty for his country by joining Wishek National Guard in January 1951 and served his country until December 1952, at which time he was honorably discharged. Alvin came back to Napoleon after his service and noticed a young lady while he was riding his horse. He asked her on a date and met the love of his life, Lois Foster. They were married on April 18, 1956. They had four boys, David, Wayne, Kyle and Rick.
Alvin and Lois started Scherr and Sons Construction and did concrete work until he retired in 1991. Alvin had a big heart for kids. Alvin had a stash of coin books, candy bars and suckers for kids who came up to visit him. Kids would recognize his car and run out to see him.
Alvin is survived by his four sons, Dave (Lucy), Colorado Springs, Colo., Wayne (Candy), Wagner, S.D., Kyle (Shellee), Westminster, Colo., and Rick (Doreen), Great Falls, Mont.; three brothers, Joe Scherr, Wendelin Scherr and Pius Scherr; four sisters, Jeanie Eckerdt, Betty Walth, Maggie Bonnet and Christine Mutchler; 12 grandchildren, Kelly (Wade) Morin, Paulette (Mike) Covairt, Kaylani Scherr, Alvin Scherr II, Trevor (Rachael Kirchoffner) Scherr, Tresa (Marty, staff sergeant in the South Dakota National Guard) Nygren, Tristen Scherr, Kyla (Toby) Shevlin, Kevin Scherr, Kelsea (Julian) Anaya, Christopher Scherr and Jessica Scherr; and 10 great-grandchildren, Cole, Wren, Cora, Leah, Tarek, Tyla, Bella, Nolan, Mason and Arya.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Christina and Wendelin; three brothers, Ralph, Albinus and George; and three sisters, Katie Williams, Mary Drost and Irene Krebs.
