Mollie Leach Obituary

NEW SALEM Ñ Mollie Ann Leach, 92, New Salem, died June 5, 2004, in a Glen Ullin care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, at Zion Lutheran Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Loren Strum officiating. Burial will be at the Graceland Cemetery, New Salem.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Chapel, New Salem. Visitation will continue Wednesday for one hour before the service at the church.

Mollie Ann Carrick was born Jan. 18, 1912, in New Salem, the daughter of William J. and Amalia (Nagel) Carrick, who were early settlers in the region. She grew up and attended school in New Salem and later received her teaching degree from Dickinson State Teachers College. She married Clayton Leach on Jan. 29, 1930, in Mandan. Mollie taught for many years in country schools and then for 11 years in Hazen. They lived on her fatherÕs homestead for 44 years. Clayton died in 1974.

Mollie loved the farm and enjoyed being outdoors. She enjoyed gardening and watching the cattle in the pasture. She felt blessed to have been able to live on the family homestead for most of her life. She continued living there after ClaytonÕs death until she moved into New Salem seven years ago. Mollie was a member of the North Dakota Teachers Association.

She is survived by one daughter, Jane Gerdes, Moorhead, Minn.; one daughter-in-law, Bonnie Leach, New Salem; 10 grandchildren, Rory (Ann) Leach, White Bear Lake, Minn., Micky Leach, Santa Fe, N.M., Timothy (Barbara) Gerdes, Minneapolis, Claudia Gerdes, West Des Moines, Iowa, Thomas Gerdes, Andover, Minn., Michael Gerdes, Burnsville, Minn., John (Sharon) Gerdes, Moorhead, Julie (John) Meaux, Indianola, Iowa, and Mary (Allen) Brobergand and David Gerdes, all of Fargo; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clayton; one son, Eldon, who died Dec. 24, 2003; two sisters, Ella Leach and Anabelle Mumby; one brother, William F. Carrick; and one granddaughter, Cindy Gerdes.

Though Mrs. Leach was not my teacher, she nonetheless impacted my life through her ever-watchful eye in the hallways and on the playground at Hazen Public School. She was always dignified, self-possessed, proper, and well-spoken--a true lady. My condolences to her family and those close to her.
