Grant Morrill Obituary

Grant Anthony Morrill, III passed away November 16th 2020 after a brief battle with Covid-19 surrounded by the love of his family. He will be thoroughly missed by his wife Leslie; brother, Peter; daughter, Carrie; and grandson, Dean.
Grant was born May 12th 1949 in Hamilton, Ohio to Grant Anthony Morrill and Marjorie Moore Morrill. Along with his little brother Peter, Grant grew up in New Canaan Connecticut where his father was the longtime rector of St Mark's, an Episcopal Church that became a touchstone for the community. Grant learned to sail and spent summers swimming on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a love that endured throughout his rich life. With his father, he marched for racial equality while participating in the March on Selma, returning 50 years later with his daughter to retrace those steps.
Grant honed his oratorial and theatrical skills studying theater arts at the illustrious California Institute for the Arts in Los Angeles. After college, Grant moved to the Monterey Bay area, building a home in Big Sur. Here, along with his good friend Jerry, he founded Morrill and Forbes Chimney Sweeps, performing his duties in a top hat and coat tails, no less. During his time in the Monterey Bay area, he was a banker, a realtor and founded a home repair business. He instilled in his daughter the drive to acquire new skills, to lead with kindness and humor, and to put all you can into the task at hand.
Moving eastward, Grant relocated amongst the Blue Ridge Mountains in Hendersonville. He opened A Well Home Home Inspections and The Second Home Management Company, serving the community with generosity and integrity. It was during this time he met his soulmate, Leslie. In Hendersonville, they built a beautiful life together, filled with love and joy. A lifelong Rotarian, Grant valued service and giving back the community both in the Monterey Bay Area and Hendersonville. He was a man with a strong moral compass and empathy, proudly contributing to many community service endeavors throughout his life. Grant was known for his charisma, unfailing sense of humor, and kindness. He will be so deeply missed and all memories of him will be greatly treasured.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to donate to his local Rotary chapter in Hendersonville, NC. Additionally, a scholarship is being created in his name, for donation information, please contact [email protected].

Leslie, you probably do not remember me. I worked for Grant in Monterey for a few years when he had his company called 'A Man Around the House' . I came to N.C. some years ago and stayed with you guys to visit and work with Grant on a couple tile projects he had going. He and I may have texted each other maybe once every 2 or three years mainly if I would see one of his pictures pop up on my computer. It must have been Jan. 2004 when I was out there. His picture from 2004 popped up on my email a couple days ago, so I texted him to wish him a Happy New Year. Grant would usually respond promptly. When I did not hear back after a couple of days I got a sick feeling in my stomach. realizing we were not getting any younger I googled him a few minutes ago. My condolences to you and the rest of his family. I read the other comments sent out and they speak for how I felt about Grant. He was one the most honest, genuine, friendly people I had ever met .I loved him as a friend and as a person. Take Care Leslie , hope you are doing well

As I have processed the loss of Grant from our sight these last weeks and days, my friendship with him will go on forever. I will continue to share his story, live the way he showed me to live both professionally and personally, follow the lessons he taught me and make use of the heartfelt gifts of time and his many talents he gave to so many. This way, he will always be here. My love goes out to my dear friend Leslie and all of Grant's family which he was so proud of.

We are so sad to loose such a fine friend and generous neighbor. Grant was one of those precious guys who never seemed to be able to say no and always had a way to brighten the day. Love to Leslie during this time of loss.

Grant was a good man with a big heart and I will miss him. He was my brother - in - law and I regret not living close because we would have hung out and had lots of fun.

Grant was both my employer and surrogate family to me after I relocated to WNC without knowing a soul. He and Leslie welcomed me into their fold and gave me a real sense of community. I'll forever remember Grant's lively "hidey-ho!" greeting, his enormous heart for service, his optimism and humor, and his indomitable drive to do his best regardless of circumstance. He made me a better version of myself by witnessing his goodness, and I have heard from so many others how he did the same for them. He is and will continue to be sorely missed by myself, my family, and the community at large. With all the love in my heart, I wish peace and comfort for Leslie, Carrie, Jake, and Deano as they grieve the loss of sweet Grant, a true giant among men.

From Valerie Forward: Grant, my sister Leslie's husband (my brother-in-law) was a friendly, good natured, outgoing man who's smile could light up a room. He was a natural orator, easy going, entertaining a room of people with his group leadership skills. I saw this in Rotary events I attended when visiting.

I remember when Grant visited my little granddaughter and family with my husband and I in San Francisco, several years ago when my granddaughter was just learning to talk. She looked up at Grant, reaching out, calling him "grandpa", and then and there, Grant teared up with emotion. He was so touched. And I remember how absolutely thrilled he was to experience being a grandpa to his little grandson, Deano. Grant was a family man, as well as an astute businessman. I remember him taking me up to see one of the amazing homes he managed up in the beautiful hills of North Carolina when I was visiting. He took such pride in his responsibilities and tasks done for others. He loved the people he worked with.

I last saw Grant around Thanksgiving of 2019 when he and Leslie (his wife, my sister) were visiting California family members. At our home we laughed at his stories and good natured chat. He was interested in others, and on that occasion, shared his joy of visiting, and connecting with his daughter (Carrie), son-in-law (Jake), and little grandson, Deano in Sonoma. And then from our house flew off home to maintain his business, which he loved.

I miss Grant's being here on this earth and will carry him with me forever in my heart as a dear, kind, socially conscious, good natured brother-in-law who SHOWED UP in whatever he did.

I send my deepest sympathies to those family members and friends close to Grant, who are grieving this deep loss.
