James Way Jr. Obituary
James B. Way Jr., 89, died November 20th at his home of natural causes. Born August 2, 1926 in Indiana, PA, he was the son of J. Bernard Way Sr., and Margaret R. Coleman Way. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, J. Fredric Way and Agnes McElhaney Way of Port Townsend, WA; a niece, Margaret A. Massey of Oak Harbor, WA and two nephews, James B. Way II of Sitka, AK and Brian F. Way of Denver, CO.
Mr. Way was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1949. As a Midshipman he served on the following ships: Washington (battleship), Randolph (carrier), and Dyess (destroyer). As a Navy Supply Corps. Officer, he served on the Vulcan (repair ship), and the Gherardi (destroyer minesweeper).
Following a tour of shore duty at the General Stores Supply Office in Philadelphia, he retired from active duty in 1954 and worked for four years as an applications engineer with the Syntron Company in Homer City, PA. Upon receiving his MBA degree at Syracuse University in 1960, he remained there for two years as a Lecturer in Marketing and then entered the doctoral program at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1964 he joined Pitt faculty members serving as consultants at the Universidad Central in Quito, Ecuador.
From 1967-79 he was a staff member of the Center for International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. From 1979-86 Mr. Way served as Director of Administrative Services at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in La Serena, Chile.
After retiring to Hendersonville, NC in October, 1986, Mr. Way became a member of Immaculate Conception Church. His volunteer work included serving as an immigrant counselor for Catholic Social Services, teacher of English as a second language, court interpreter, translator for Habitat and Hospice, and tutor for the Blue Ridge Literacy Council.
In 2007 Mr. Way moved to Pennybyrn at Maryfield, a continuing care retirement community in High Point, NC.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Maryfield's chapel at a later date. Burial with full military rites will follow in the veterans' section of Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hendersonville, NC.
One of Mr. Way's favorite charities was the Working boys Center in Quito, Ecuador. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center, c/o Family Unity International, 12750 Stephen Place, Elm Grove, Wisconsin, 53122
