Larry Mullenix Obituary

After three critical surgeries and weeks of intensive rehab, Larry Joe Mullenix, 72, was completely healed and his body restored when he met his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, February 20, 2021.

A celebration of life will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 26, 2021, at Paramount Baptist Church, 3801 S. Western Street, Amarillo, TX. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd., Amarillo, TX.

Larry was born on December 29, 1948, in Childress, TX to Joe and Swanee Mullenix.

He graduated from Childress High School in 1967. He married the love of his life, Rita Ann Evans on February 15, 1969. He graduated from North Texas State University in 1971 and within two weeks of graduation, was at boot camp and served in the United States Army from 1971- 1974. He moved to Borger, TX in 1976 and while in Borger worked for Phillips 66 Company, Bennett Carder, and The City of Borger. He retired as the Director of Planning and Zoning in May of 2011 but did not stop working. He continued doing contract work for the cities of Borger, Panhandle, Pampa, and Amarillo. He and Rita moved to Amarillo in April 2015 to be near his son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughters. His focus became tinkering in his wood shop restoring furniture. He was a member of Paramount Baptist Church and the CIA Sunday school class where he served faithfully. His favorite things were fishing, riding jet skis with Rita and his granddaughters, wood working, the Texas Rangers, and working crossword puzzles. His favorite places were Lake Meredith, Possum Kingdom Lake and any place he was with Rita.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Swanee Mullenix; his paternal grandparents, Earnest and Nina Mullenix; and his maternal grandparents, Fred and Marie Culpepper.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Rita Evans Mullenix of Amarillo; daughter, Cara Mullenix and husband Todd Artigue of Wichita Falls; son, Chad Mullenix and wife Carlye of Amarillo; three granddaughters, Kaylee, Kelsey, and Kiley Mullenix, all of Amarillo; sister, Illa Flemmons and husband Lefty of Russell, Kansas; a cousin who was like a sister, Paula Badger and husband Tom of Amarillo; his brother-in-law and fishing buddy, Fran Simmons and wife Linda of Omaha, TX; his brother-in-law and fellow crossword puzzle enthusiast, Larry Evans and wife Rita of Childress; brother-in-law, Jim Evans of Aubrey; sister-in-law, Jan Grantham of Paradise; brother-in-law, Mike Evans and wife Diane of Childress; 16 nieces and nephews; and last, but not least his 4-legged fur baby, Chief.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Samaritan's Purse, Snack Pak 4 Kids, and Paramount Baptist Renovation Project.
