ALBERT G. "AL" HURD

HURD, Albert G. "Al" Albert Gordon Hurd died peacefully on October 21 in Rutland, VT, at age 88. Al is survived by Torvy Hurd, his wife of 62 years; son Jonathan (wife Tracey) of Concord, MA; son Christopher (wife Erica) of Pittsfield, VT; and grandchildren Roger, Keely, and Amelia. Al was born in Worcester, MA to Gordon Hurd, a social worker, and Ethel Hurd, a teacher. The youngest of four children, he grew up in Medford, MA, and received a bachelor's degree in Physics from MIT in 1951. Al worked for more than twenty-five years at Visidyne in Burlington, MA, where he was a patent-holding upper atmosphere physicist. Al was a Life Deacon and choir member at First Church of Christ, Congregational in Bedford, MA, where he lived for fifty years. He served on the Bedford chapter of Citizen's Scholarship Foundation for thirty-seven years, including positions as president and historian, and was named to the Dollars for Scholars National Honor Roll. A peaceful, kind man with a clever sense of humor, Al loved music and nature, and could readily recognize classical music, birds and birdsongs, plants, and trees. He played on company softball teams for many years, once bowled a 150 candlepin string, and was a lifelong Red Sox fan. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on December 16 at First Church of Christ, 25 Great Rd, Bedford, with a reception to follow.
