He served during the Korean conflict in Hokkaido, Japan, where he instructed fellow soldiers in Defense Against Chemical Biological and Radiological Attacks (CBR). Upon discharge in the spring of 1954, he returned to Manchester and worked at Granite State Packing. At the urging of his boss, he took advantage of the G.I. Bill and enrolled at the University of New Hampshire that fall. At UNH he enjoyed fraternity life, played lacrosse under Coach Whoops Snively, and met his future wife, Joyce Kelly. He earned a Bachelors' (1958) and Masters' (1959) in American History. After two years teaching and coaching at the Hatch School in Newport, R.I., Andy attended the University of Virginia, where he pursued research in the experience of blacks in American history. He earned a Ph.D. and continued teaching, first at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va., then in 1968 joined Boston College's Department of History as their first specialist in Black History. At Boston College, Dr. Buni was an early and persistent voice for diversity among faculty and graduate students. He worked to bring black faculty to BC and strengthen Black Studies. He fought to make the hiring and tenuring of women a priority. He advocated for gay and lesbian faculty. His curricula emphasized the popular American experience from immigration, to urban and ethnic history, the history of American film, sport, environmental studies, and music. He continued road racing into his 70s when aortic stenosis brought him to a halt. Diagnosed with fronto-temporal dementia in the summer of 2005, Andy retired after 38 years of teaching in June of 2006. In his final years, Andy enjoyed his children and grandchildren, friends, neighbors, and former students. He participated in Interfaith Peace Demonstrations on the Needham Common. He embraced Needham Senior Center activities, including yoga, a current events discussion group, and weekly movies. Dr. Buni was one of the best professors I ever had. I remember him tossing books to us at the beginning of class - I caught a book with newsclippings on Jim Crow, and I read every book Dr. Buni could possibly assign or suggest on the Black experience in America - his courses truly impacted you with compassion and intellect, and gave an amazing framework for analyzing the world.

To his dear family, I think often of Dr. Buni at the holidays, and I had no idea from last year that he might be ailing. I found a book today written recently by an American journalist who gave a view of the last 40 years of the black experience in America. I wanted to send it to Dr. Buni, and instead today learned that he has passed. I am sad to know of the loss of this dear professor, but I want you to know how valuable his rigorous intellectual style has been to me and meant to me and my work over the years. God Bless, Andy, we miss and thank you, Paula A. Argento, BC '78 BA

Andy did an independent study with me on Jewish Immigration, and my heritage. He was on my Masters Orals Committee along with Cecil Tate, and Dick Hughes -- all three of whom I remember fondly and with gratitude. Larry

I miss my uncle Andy. If he were here, he would probably put his arm around me and say "how are ya' kid?" I'm loving the one i miss.

Professor Buni taught courses to both of my parents and (thirty years later) to me on Boston history and neighborhoods. He was a generous and kind person who gave a great deal to the BC community. My thoughts are with his family.

My sincere condolences to the Buni family. Dr. Buni taught me at BC 30 years ago. His History of Boston course was one of my all time favorites. He made a lasting positive impression on many young people. May he rest in peace.
