ANTHONY RENAU Obituary

RENAU, Anthony "Tony" Age 67, of West Newbury, MA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on the September 12, 2023, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, after a sudden short illness. Tony was born in London on March 29, 1956. He was the youngest son of Luis and Elsie Renau; and had an older brother, Luis. He was educated in London and Surrey and later went to the University of Leicester for his Bachelor of Science, Manchester University for his Master of Science and University of London to complete his Ph.D in Physics. In 1984, he began working for Applied Materials in Horsham, England. After moving to the USA in 1989, he worked for Genus Inc. in Newburyport and Lepton in New Jersey. He joined Varian Semiconductor Equipment in 1993 and became VP of Technology before ultimately becoming VP and Chief Technology Officer, after Varian was acquired by Applied Materials. His capacity for innovation and contribution to Varian is underscored by the 65 patents, including the fundamental design patents on Varian's most successful products, leading to many thousands of systems shipped and many billions of dollars in sales. Tony was a leader in the scientific community and the author of the ion source chapter of the implant industry's school book. He is survived by his wife, Caroline; his son, Oliver and wife, Elise; his daughter, Lucy; his daughter, Sally and partner, Joey Johnson; and his son, Tom and wife, Eglantine; and four grandchildren, Desmond, 14, Ysabel, 13, Jack, three and Sam, two; his cousin, Juan and wife, Eva from Barcelona Spain; his sister-in-law, Cathy from London, UK; his sister-in-law, Susan; and her children from France. He was predeceased by his father, Luis; mother, Elsie; and brother, Luis. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Beauport Hotel, Gloucester MA, on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, from 3 to 6pm. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., NEWBURYPORT, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Renau's family with his arrangements. No words an express how missed Tony will be. Caroline and kids, he was a wonderful wonderful guy. Smart, Funny and oh how he loved you. We are all fortunate to have traveled through parts of our own lives with him. Peace. Rocco.
