BERTIL LIANDER Obituary

LIANDER, Bertil Died March 10, 2014, at the age of 87, in Easthampton, MA. He leaves his wife, Kerstin, son and daughter, Marten & Catharina, with their spouses Johanna & Peter. He leaves grandchildren, Anna & Johan Esbensen, Margit & Signe Liander. He leaves three sisters in Sweden. After graduating from the Stockholm School of Economics, he moved to Paris in 1958 for a position with the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC). In 1961 he moved to Rome to work with RCA International. A move to the United States followed, in 1963, for the position of Director in International Studies at the Marketing Science Institute in Philadelphia. He received his PhD from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he ran the MBA program. He retired from UMass in 1991 as a Professor Emeritus. He was an active member of his community including being a Selectman for the Town of Williamsburg, MA for two terms. The Williamsburg Funeral Home has been entrusted with cremation arrangements. Following Bertils wishes, there will be no service. For those wishing, memorial donations would be appreciated to the VNA and Hospice of Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Northampton, MA.

6 years later, I wish to add my memories... Prof. Liander was the reason I attended U.Mass Amherst when I first came to campus in June of 1973 from France... I met him and learned that he would be my foreign student advisor in the School of Business. He was also instrumental in me receiving a foreign student tuition waiver from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
He was a great teacher because of his wide international experience.
I will always remember him for his mentorship!

Bertil pushed me into the MBA program at UMASS in 1983, while I was just an unconfident undergraduate. He really helped me a lot! I wish I had contacted him and told him! A very special person!

I met Bertil sometime in the early 1960s while I was a doctoral candidate in Economics at the University of Rome. I remember a kind man with a similar scholastic background as my own, a few years older than me and have thought of him over the past half-century plus. I would have liked to rekindle our acquaintance in America. I am sorry for your loss and wish you serenity and good health.

Kerstin...I just learned of Bertil's passing. Anne and I offer our sympathies. He was a great colleague and our mutual love of Sweden gave us many moments of enjoyment. He was instrumental in my getting to Lund in 1979 and that changed my life. I thank him for that. Sweden has become my second home and culture. I learned from one of my cousins last night that Bertil had passed away and I wanted to offer my condolences. I remember how fond my uncle, Ira Gabrielson, was of Bertil and how they so enjoyed each other's company along with other members of the "old farts club". I heard this very sad news while in Gothenburg, Sweden.

I will always treasure the warmth extended to me by Dr. Bertil Liander from the time I interviewed for a faculty position at the UMass Amherst School of Management until the day Bertil retired. I always loved his warmth, sense of humor and his cosmopolitan nature and even remember his dog that he would bring to school when he was our MBA Director. Bertil, you were very special and you will be missed! My sincerest condolences to Mrs. Liander and family.
