Today, while I was reading through the Berklee Alumni magazine, I suddenly saw the obituary of Professor Bob Winter. He was my private lesson teacher during my first year at Berklee. The school had assigned him to me as my first private lesson teacher. That year, the early spring in Boston was very cold, and the nights grew dark quickly. That semester was full of challenges for me, but he encouraged me, saying, "Don't compare yourself to someone else, it's not healthy." This phrase was incredibly important for a young artist. At the end of the semester, he had me record one of his improvisations on my phone. Like his personality, the musical phrases were calm, balanced, and flawless. Rest in peace.

I met Bob Winter 45 years ago when a former Boston Sailing Center student invited me to meet Bob and to hear him play.
I met a man whose dedication to his music was astounding.
After teaching modern jazz piano all day to students at Berklee, he'd rush to play in a magnificent room of mirrors and chandeliers (on Milk Street?) until it closed for the night. If my memory is right, he also played with the summer pops at Tanglewood. I'd never experienced such music before, captivated by its complexity and an affirmation of individuality, it set minds free.
On one of my visits (with a head-hunter) I got to talk with Bob between sets and learned that his favorite piece to play was "Sesame Street" because he could improvise from it all day without repeating himself.
I need not say that among piano teachers that Bob was the best of the Best.
An inspiration for everyone to do the same with what every they do.

Leah, Paul and family. We are so very sad to hear that Cousin Bob passed. We have so many memories of seeing him whenever we went to a Pops concert. He always had a smile for us

I was a student of Bob´s at Berklee in 1992. He was the sweetest piano teacher ever. For a young woman from the other side of the planet, who was all alone in this great big country, it was always comforting to have a teacher like Bob. Someone calm and kind.
My condolences to his family.

My deepest sympathy to Bob's wife Leah, his son Paul, and all his family and friends. I'm so grateful to Bob for performing/recording my songs beginning in 2000, when I was just starting to write music. His beautiful renditions inspired me to keep writing.

Bob was a great musician and pianist, admired by virtually all that heard him play. He was also a great teacher; he helped so many young pianists. I recently spoke to the young, phenomenal Colombian jazz pianist Jesus Molina, who studied with Bob at Berklee, who credited him with his success as a pianist and composer/arranger. Among his many admirers was John Williams, and many other musical luminaries. In addition, he was a class individual who is already missed by so many, especially me...

Bob, you touched so many, many lives over the years; nothing moves and lifts the soul like music.
Rest peacefully.
