BRUCE MUNCH Obituary

MUNCH, Bruce Gregory Age 77, of Essex, MA, formerly of Dorchester, MA, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, after a short illness. Brother to Joyce M. Jenkins; uncle to Meredith Fuson-Hill, Monica McGarvey and Natalie Atsou, and partner, to Nina Fletcher. Bruce leaves many loyal friends, among them Susan Hardy-Brown, Nick Simon, Leo Boise and Frank Brooker. He was born on May 3, 1947, in Brighton, MA, where he spent his early childhood with his extended family. They moved to Norwell, where Bruce graduated from Randolph High and went on to study art at the School of Practical Art in Kenmore Square. In the early 70s, Vietnam loomed large, so Bruce joined the Navy for four years and became a Naval Air jet mechanic. Much to his delight, he was stationed in California, where he reveled in exploring the mountains and coast, adding hiking and surfing to his repertoire of outdoor passions. He headed back to Boston, deciding to pursue horticulture and graduated from UMass Stockbridge in landscaping, eventually landing his dream job at the Arnold Arboretum. There he worked as an arborist for 31 years. But his main love was the water and all things wind-borne. He was a longtime member of the Savin Hill Yacht Club (and before that the South Boston Yacht Club) where he kept his beloved Cape Dory. Sailer, kayaker, 210 racer, iceboater, surfer, hiker, skier, painter, gardener extraordinaire. Bruce was first and foremost the kindest and most gentle of men to all who knew him. May the wind be always at your back. Visiting Hours: Arrangements by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, GLOUCESTER. So sorry to hear Bruce past away. I really enjoyed getting to know Bruce when I was an intern at the Arnold in 1982. My best memories include flounder fishing and kayaking in Boston Harbor.

What a great guy! Bruce and I shared many adventures including rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon to celebrate our 50th birthdays. He taught me how to cross country ski and introduced me to sailing. We worked together at the Arnold Arboretum and had been friends for over 30 years. He lives forever in my heart.

Bruce was a brother. We spent many years together canoeing and kayaking on the North River and the Boston Harbor Islands. In 1978 we did a bicycle tour of the Everglades National Park with his sister Joyce.
So sad to learn of his passing.

Bruce and I were at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture together, and interned at the Arnold Arboretum. I remember him as a kind, and gentle man.
