JAFFE, Conrade Carl Conrade Carl Jaffe, M.D., of Charlestown died on November 4th, 2021 -- his 79th birthday. Carl is survived by his wife, Toini, sons Peter (Adrienne) and Judson (Christen Deveney), and grandchildren Sean, Alex, Wyatt, and Caroline. He is also survived by his brother Don (Marti Morrison), and by his sisters Christina (Jerry Kahrs), Valerie (Obie O'Brien), and Sandra. He was surrounded by family in his final hours. After a distinguished career contributing to the growth of medical imaging, Carl spent his final years pursuing his most passionate role -- a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved watching his grandchildren's sports games, reading to them on a cozy couch, and creating scavenger hunts for them. Born in Boston to the late Bernard and Ruth Jaffe, Carl attended Boston Latin School and M.I.T. Originally thinking he would be an architect, he ultimately found his true passion in medicine. After attending medical school at Columbia University, he had a long career as a professor and clinician at Yale University School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital. During that time he founded the Center for Advanced Instructional Media, which created award-winning interactive instructional software for teaching medical diagnostic imaging. After retiring from Yale as professor emeritus of internal medicine, he served as a Branch Chief of the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Imaging Program. In that role, he was the original catalyst for what became the Cancer Imaging Archive, which has assisted thousands of scientists in their research. In 2008, he returned to Boston to be closer to his growing family and spent the remaining years of his career as a professor of radiology at Boston University's School of Medicine. Just as he nurtured his family, Carl took great joy in nurturing and mentoring younger doctors and scientists. Though he was brilliant, full of energy, hardworking, and highly accomplished, he was above all humble, generous, caring, and always aware of how lucky he was to have lived the life that he did. Services will be privately held. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carl's memory may be made to one of the following organizations that were meaningful to him: Boston Health Care for the Homeless, Boston Latin School, Boston Museum of Science, Boys & Girls Club of Charlestown, the Conservation Law Foundation, Partners in Health, or another charity of your choosing.
