Caroline Bloy Obituary

BLOY, Caroline Church Activist and Educator Whether pacing the field hockey sidelines, organizing hymn sings at church, walking her standard poodles in the woods, or debating politics at dinner parties, Caroline Bloy rarely sat still. The long-time Newton resident was "a force to be reckoned with," recalled her daughter, Sarah Bloy. "Opinionated, full of energy, and always trying to bring people together." Mrs. Bloy, 86, died April 30 of cancer, with her children at Parmenter Hospice in Wayland.Born Caroline Parker Kuhn in New York City, Mrs. Bloy grew up in New York City and Bedford, N.Y. in a family that included a long line of West Point graduates. She graduated from Chapin School and later from Bouvé Boston School at Tufts College with a degree in physical education. After World War II, she volunteered to help rebuild cities in Germany, and then returned to Boston to work at several colleges. Mrs. Bloy taught physical education and coached athletics at Simmons College, Wellesley College, and Pine Manor Junior College. She also worked in the admissions office at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, where she coordinated a program for returning adult students. Mrs. Bloy was a lifelong active member of the Episcopal Church, and in 1954 married the Rev. Myron B. Bloy Jr., a national leader in college campus ministries. She was active in several Episcopal communities, including Parishfield in Michigan, Grace Church in Newton, and St. Brendan the Navigator in Stonington, Maine. The couple and their three children lived for many years in Newton, where Mrs. Bloy worked as a real estate broker and also co-founded a food cooperative of more than a hundred families, operating out of her home's basement. A progressive Democrat, Mrs. Bloy was passionate about the human justice movement and animal rights. She was a dedicated New England Patriots and Boston Celtics fan, but paid little attention to other aspects of pop culture. She once played doubles tennis with Clint Eastwood without realizing that her partner was a famous actor. For many friends and family members, the strongest memories of Mrs. Bloy revolve around Little Deer Isle, Maine, where she and the Rev. Bloy spent summers at the house they built in the 1960s. There Mrs. Bloy enjoyed organizing games and songs for visitors, walking with her dogs, tending her vegetable garden, sailing with her family, and feeding her friend Oscar the seagull on the granite ledge in front of the house. Mrs. Bloy retired in 1998 to Topsham, Maine, but she kept in touch with a wide circle of friends, who knew her as "Kuhnie," from as far back as girlhood summers at Singing Eagle Lodge on Squam Lake, N.H. She was predeceased by her husband, her sister Margaret Rockefeller, and her brother Richard Kuhn Jr. She leaves three children Michael Bloy of Southborough, Peter Bloy of Newton, and Sarah Bloy of Brunswick, Maine and six grandchildren: Anna, Frederick, Caroline, Cameron, Owen, and Luther. A memorial service will be held May 7, at 2 p.m. in Grace Church, Newton. Mrs. Bloy asked that donations in her name go to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tenn. (www.elephants.com).

She was the most fun person to play tennis with or to do anything with. She had great instructions. If you find a bra that fits, buy ten. She would say "fault" when a serve was out, not just boring "out.' She and Mike were a blessing in my life. Merry Penfield

Loved playing tennis with her and I treasure her wisdom. Who else would proclaim, "maintain the table" when everyone got up to help clear at a dinner party or, "if you find a bra that fits, buy ten?" I am most grateful to have known her.

Caroline is with me every time I play tennis. She never called a ball out; it was always fault in a most superior tone of voice. She shared invaluable advice. If you find a bra that fits, buy ten. I rejoice that I was lucky enough to know her and Mike. Merry penfield

We spent the day with Khunie on Little Deer Isle when I worked as a ranger at Acadia in the summer of 1995. My grandmother, Bettie Keating (long-time friend of Khunie), spent the night at the Little Deer Isle house and we retrieved her the next day and were treated to a boat ride around the island by Khunie. What a ball of wonderful energy she was. My mother, Sherry Keating, still talks about going up to NY with your family and the poodles and swimming, etc. She will be greatly missed, but her wonderful grace and manor will always be remembered.

Michael, Sarah and Peter,
Your mother was loved dearly by her Virginia friends. She will be sadly missed. She left indelible memories of her kindness, common sense, face the difficulties and get it done attitude, compassion and her ever present sense of humor. Both she and your Dad were critical aspects of my early family life, from baptizing Gabriel to nurturing Meghan, who had the idea she was Mattie poodle' s puppy! May knowing she was loved by so many others comfort you in your sorrow.

Caroline was an impressive figure, and a practical one at that. Her ability to oversee big houses, whether Brookline or Newton, keep track of three youngsters - and Mike ! - was a kind of model. A good listener, quick to respond to a question or joke, smiling most when things got tough, Ann and I profited from her almost reflexive common sense...and her generosity. As I wrote to Tony Stoneburner, we still have the couch she gave us just after Mike and Tony married us 40 years ago June.

To All the Bloy clan....I first met your mother, grandmother at the reversal dinner after party for Sarah and David as she strode in adetrrmined fashion across the floor of the Island country Club.

Iknew I had met a soul mate.We developed a great friendship playing tennis and sailing the Pearson.

She validated for me some 26 years her junior that it was just fine to be who you are and also one could be a fine servant of God without going to church,if one was serving the well being of others

I will miss her but carry her spirit on....

She was also a favorite of my Davids

Love to all of you

Bill and I will miss Caroline ever so much. We have dozens of Bloy tales - some of our most fun times were with them. Watching Wimbledon on the deck with the TV under the trees; tennis at Blue Hill, sailing yarns. We send Pete, Michael and Sarah our love and sympathy, Merry and Bill Penfield

I shall miss Caroline. What is a summer without a shout across the bay or an imprompto motor out, to where we are picnicking, from Caroline. With every piece of news, I always knew she would add a bit of her own criticism and make me think. The memory of her laughter keeps me going through another foggy day in Maine.

My sincerest thoughts of sympathy go out to the Bloy Children. I adored your mother, she was of the most wonderful women I have ever known. She had such a wonderful heart, not to mention her incredible sense of humor.
Always giving to everyone, anything, anytime. She will be sadly missed by me, my family and I am sure thousands of others that she touched so deeply. Maxine Veducccio
