CHARLES BALDWIN Obituary

BALDWIN, Charles E. III "Skip" Born on November 7, 1932, died December 26, 2016. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he graduated from Kimball Union Academy in 1950 where he was a member of the football, lacrosse and ski (downhill, x-country, jumping) teams. He graduated from Harvard College in 1954 where he played varsity lacrosse for three years and was a member of the Owl and Hasty Pudding Clubs. In 1955 he married Lola Fortmiller. While in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956, he was stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany as a member of the 10th Mountain Division. Skip worked for Polaroid Corporation from 1961-1988 as a senior engineering manager. For 40 years, Juniper Farm was his home on Newton Street in Weston, MA. He took an early retirement in 1988 and soon after sold Round Shot Panoramic Cameras. He had many happy days cruising the Maine Coast with his family on "Drifter," his grandfather's 30-foot Chris Craft. Skip was an avid skier, bicyclist, sailor and rower. He ski raced in the New England Masters circuit, was a long-term trustee of the New England Ski Museum and was a past president of the Ski Club Hocheberge, both in Franconia, NH. Skip enjoyed many ski trips across North America and throughout Europe, a favorite destination being Maria Saalen, in Northern Italy. His sailing adventures included racing One Designs in Boothbay Harbor where he summered for many years, establishing the junior program at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and sailing twice across the Atlantic as navigator on a 36-foot boat. He loved rowing in his single shell, "Lola" and rowed in the Master's class in the Head of the Charles Regatta for several years. He was a former member of the Board of Old North Church in Canaan, NH, and remained on the Canaan Historic Commission. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lola, his daughters Christie Hallowell (husband Barney) of North Haven, ME and Betsy Baldwin of Brighton, MA, and sons Chuck of Orange, NH and Peter (wife Jona) of Bow, NH, 4 grandchildren Leta, Maddie, Alexandra, and Carter and 4 step-grandchildren Amanda, Jessie, Zach & Sam Hallowell, and sister Beverley McCoid. He was predeceased by his brother John M. Baldwin. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Kimball Union Academy of Meriden, NH or the New England Ski Museum in Franconia, NH in Skip's memory. A remembrance ceremony will be held in the spring. Messages of condolence may be expressed with the family through an online guestbook by visiting www.rickerfuneralhome.com

Special memories of Harvard-Dartmouth games, touch football and tennis games with Skip, Lola and their children at their lovely home in Weston, racing One Designs with Skip in Boothbay Harbor, tennis on Juniper Point, baseball games at Reed's Beach and the friendship between Skip and my husband Ham Swan as they grew up as the only two small boys living near each other on McKown Point.

Dear Lola,

Jane and I send our deepest condolences. We had come to know you both upon your move to Canaan, and had been hoping to see more of you both after your move to Lebanon(and ours to Kendal). Skip has left us much too soon......

Visits to the Egan Reunion weekend on the Cape have now been diminished by one more stalwart. They will not be the same with Skip's absence. He is greatly missed by us all.

Our hearts go out to you at this time. We hope to see you after our return to Hanover March 1.

Lola, we were so sorry to hear of Skip's passing and will miss his quiet humor and gentle nature. He was such a multi-faceted person accomplished in so many endeavors. I had a great conversation with him on the steps of the Meeting House last August, and his sense of humor was characteristically in fine tune. Bless you, Dimitri with Mary

Lola,
I would like to add my condolences. I did not see much of Skip in recent years, but he was a very prominent and enjoyable companion of our shared youth and our families have shared a lot. In my last conversation with Skip I was impressed with his ongoing attention to his health as he described his own personal yoga type exercises. I trust that he cherished the memories of our shared youth as I have.

Lola,
I was so sorry to learn of Skip's passing. He was a good friend and college classmate and will be sorely missed by his many friends. I often saw him on his return from his early morning rows on the Charles River. He was finished before many of us had gotten out of bed. His love of skiing and determination to master the German language were among his many attributes. Please accept my deepest sympathy and I will remember him in my prayers.

January 4, 2017

Lola, Bev and families, Don and I send our deepest sympathies. Ham's first real friend in Boothbay when they were little boys around 7 or 8. Because of Skip, Ham enjoyed a year at KUA. So many memories; golf with his lobster putter, racing the One Designs, island picnics, Harvard-Dartmouth football, biking, his warm smile, his friendship. He will be missed.

To the Baldwin family,

My deepest condolences to read about Skip's passing. I have some of my best memories our days of ski racing throughout New England; training at Burke, racing in the bitter cold of Jay Peak, and night skiing at Blue Hill. We were too young to appreciate how much time you spent driving us all over the Northeast to ski races (and I'm sure Pete and I drove you crazy in the backseat) but I look back on that now as time that shaped my life.

Skip was a big part of what drove the passion and pursuit of skiing for our entire family. We will miss him but we will always remember these times.

Dearest Lola,
As Rich First said about Skip - "a life well-lived" and we add that you were the light of his life!

You were the anchor of our women's town team tennis partnership ( lucky me) decades ago -- and the bonus was hanging out at magical Juniper Farm and having sightings of your family.. and getting to know Skip who was always a sweet presence, quietly smart!

The glue to Skip was also the lasting friendship of Pete and Rich and their adventures with you in NH. Their bond continues today. Fessenden got something right!!!

So time flies -but memories linger. Please feel our hugs and sincere condolences.
