Dear Doe Family,

I am very sorry for your loss. Charlie was a great guy. I remember the meeting with Charlie and his crew from the restaurant at Pine Street Inn in the mid-1980s. Charlie wanted to come to Pine St. once a month with an entire meal for the Pine St. guests - a regular "99" meal - the works, including dessert, once a month, on Tuesday. (I was the volunteer coordinator at the time.)

Every month Charlie came in with all of the food and a crew of restaurant staff. During those years I think we counted on meals for about 600 guests who were staying at the emergency shelter at the South End location. During the heat of the summer, grills were fired up for cookouts by the 99.

At the same time, Charlie's presence was that of a regular guy; he was unpretentious about his commitment to serving the Pine St. guests.

Dear Shirley and Family,

I am deeply sorry to hear of Charlie's passing, and send my fondest love and thoughts to you all.

I knew even at 17, on my fist visit to your summer home nearly 40 years ago, that Charlie was an extraordinary person. His amazing presence, kindly sense of fun and love for his family made a huge impression that has only been reinforced over the years. When Charlie gave me the opportunity to work in a "99" in Boston in 1971, I gained much more than tips and work experience; his charismatic leadership and strong work ethic have stood as a beacon of inspiration for my career in business.

Just a few memories of Charlie from England, where I'm sure there are many others, and he'll always be remembered.

Hope to see you again soon

To the Doe Family: I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Charlie Doe, who I met in 1986 when he and I traveled Manchester and Hooksett, New Hampshire looking for sites that could become another 99 Restaurant. Charlie Doe is a "once in a lifetime" person that you never forget, and who brought happiness to many many people. May he rest in peace.

To The Doe Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Charlie was a very special man, whom I met in 1979, when I started at the Billerica "99". Back then when he walked into one of his Restaurants he knew everyone by name, from the Managers to the dishwashers. I have so many memories of him coming in and he was always so pleasant. I want to say Thank you for letting me meet some of my very best friends from working at the 99 for 24 years, and if not for Charlie Doe, I would have not met these people. Thank you for "Treating People Right"

My prayers go out to all of you, he will be missed, but will live on in memory forever.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Doe family. Charlie touched so many lives that his invigorating spirit will live on forever. I'm just one of the countless many that has fond memories of him. He just had a way of making everyone feel special and appreciated no matter how big the company got. My favorite memories are those that were at the Pine Street Inn!

"Mr. and Mrs. Doe" were quite simply the most generous people I have every had the opportunity to meet. They did so much for my friends and me during our college years. And then years later, I remember stopping by unannounced at the Falmouth beach house with my family when in the area and being greeted with, "Well you ARE staying overnight here we hope." What wonderful people. You will be missed Mr. Doe.

While I really didn't know Charlie

personally, I knew of him through my

daughter who has worked at the 99

all of her adult life. She has told

me over the years of all the wonderful things that Charlie, his family and those from the "Nines" have done for others who have been

less fortunate. Charlie has been

called home and my prayers and thoughts are with his family and his many friends at this very sad time.

Sincerely,

Dot Sorensen

The Hartford Catholic Worker community and House of Hospitality extends our prayers and sympathies to the family of Charlie Doe. Charlie was very generous supporting our work with the homeless and with the children of north Hartford. For several years Mr. Doe, his family and his staff donated dozens of wonderful toys for our annual neighborhood Christmas party. And once after meeting our rather skinny dog he donated some premium dog food (and a few premium steaks) to put meat on the bones of both dog and owners. The Doe family is in our prayers. We hope that those who knew Charlie will be inspired to work and pray for peace with justice, justice with mercy and life with dignity for all of God's children.

To the family of Charlie Doe, Working at the 99 for many years has enabled me to meet and know many many people. The very first time I was introduced to Charlie Doe he was sharing a laugh with his "Doctor friend" at one of the first "oyster bars" in the area, the Middlesex Turnpike 99 over 25 years ago! He was always soft spoken, witty and had a twinkle in his eyes and smile. I am thankful for the opportunity to have known Charlie and his children who have all grown to be so proud of. I am so very sad and sorry for your loss.

Please accept my deepest sympathies, to you and your wonderful family. He will be missed by all especially all of us who has worked with him at the "99's", and the most valuable lesson he has taught us over the years is to treat people right. Thank you Charlie we'll all miss you!
