Charles Lauriat Obituary

Of 87 Washington Depot, CT died Sunday, April 25, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy McLean Lauriat, formerly of Danbury Connecticut; four children, the Honorable Peter M. Lauriat of Concord, MA, John R. Lauriat of Roxbury CT, Debora L. Lavigne of Somers, CT and Suzanne Lauriat Sheridan of Watertown MA; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter. He was born on March 15, 1917 in West Newton Massachusetts, son of the late Charles E. Lauriat Jr. and Marion B. Lauriat. He attended Brookline High School and graduated from Yale University in the Class of 1940 with a BS in Industrial Administration. During World War II he served in the US Army with the 114th Combat Engineer Battalion, of the 32nd Division in the South Pacific for 3 1/2 years joined the US Army Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonial in 1977. In 1946 he returned to the United Shoe Machinery Corporation in Boston and in 1950 moved to Danbury Connecticut where he served with several companies, including Danbury Hospital. He moved to Washington Connecticut where he worked as Treasurer of Sayford Corporation in Litchfield in 1958. As an Enrolled Agent he formed his own tax consulting business in 1964 in which he was active at the time of his death. He became active in many local, civic and charitable organizations, serving 40 years as Treasurer of the Bryan Memorial Fund and Treasurer of the Washington Club for 17 years. He was a member of the Lions Club for 30 years and Director and officer of the Washington Cemetery Association, The Judea Water Company, The First Congregational Church, The Village Improvement Society and the Church Hill Corporation, which started the Bee Brook Crossing condominiums in Washington Depot. He was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church and a volunteer for NEADS, National Education for Assistance Dog Services, Inc. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contribution may be made to St. John's Church, P.O. Box 1278, Washington CT 06793 or NEADS, National Education for Assistance Dog Services, Inc. P.O. Box 213, West Boylston, MA 01583. A memorial service for the public will be held on May 12th at 11:00am at St. John's Church.
