I joined the then Air Force Cambridge Research Labs in 1974 as a 2nd Lieutenant fresh out of graduate school. I was assigned to be Charlie´s deputy on the newly organized Spacecraft Charging at High Altitudes (SCATHA) satellite program. Given the great success of our collaboration on SCATHA I can truly say my professional career began with Charlie. He taught me how to organize conferences, how to get funding, and how to write books. Together we co-authored the first book on the space environment and its effects of spacecraft systems for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics that became the foundation of courses at MIT, NASA, and the Air Force. Indeed, Charlie was one of the "founders" of the modern field of spacecraft charging. More importantly Charlie provided me with a safe environment in which I was able to develop as a scientist. Ultimately, first as a full time AF officer and then as Charlie´s reserve officer (I went on to a 42 year career at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory) I spent over 10 years working with him. He was a great mentor and role model for me and I will greatly miss him!
My one really strong memory I have of Charlie and his firefighter hobby was that no matter where we stayed he always went over with me where the fire exits were relative to our rooms after we checked in! Fire safety to the end...

My deepest condolences. I was most fortunate to have Charlie as my boss and friend since 1981. He was an admirable, gentle, and exceptionally brilliant guy always.

Charlie was my first boss of my first job after my academic formation. His kindness and sharing of knowledge set the standard for the rest of my career. My condolences to his family, who came first in all his personal sharings.
