CHARLES ROTH Obituary

ROTH, Charles "Chuck" Edward III 1942 - 2025 Chuck's life on earth ended peacefully on February 28, 2025, due to complications arising from a traumatic fall. He was 83 years old. Chuck was born on January 16, 1942, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, to Charles Edward Roth, Jr. and Ada Nield Ainsworth. At age 12, following his father's death, his family relocated to Lexington, Massachusetts. After graduating from Lexington High School, he received a U.S. Navy scholarship to attend Virginia Tech, where he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering and was elected to the Sigma Xi honor society. He also had an MS from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he trained as a Naval Architect, specializing in computer aided ship design. For 40 years, Chuck owned a software development company and was the principal designer of many large-scale manufacturing control and power plant construction management systems used world-wide. In 1985, in association with a colleague at Cambridge University in England, he created PowerMath, the first computer algebra and calculus program for the Macintosh. Chuck discovered his love for rowing while studying at MIT. In 1971, he became a member of the U.S. rowing team and went on to win gold medals in numerous national and international Masters' rowing championships. In the early 1970s, Chuck developed a software system to automate timing for the Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge. He also dedicated over 15 years to serving as the President of the Rowing Association of Naples, situated on the Gordon River. Chuck was an avid reader, with a particular interest in Roman history and the American Revolution. He enjoyed browsing through comic strips in the newspapers and liked sharing jokes. His easygoing nature and sense of humor really brightened up life. Chuck is survived by his beloved wife and pal forever, Linda, with whom he shared 56 wonderful years; and his loyal walking companion, Smokey.

Linda, I am so sad to hear of Chuck's passing. He was so smart, interesting, and fun to be around. You two were very dear to Fran and Jerry. I wish you many blessings in this new chapter of your life. --Phyllis (Olrich) LeBard
