Dear Beth,

I am sorry to hear of your father's passing. As a member of the Mass ANG from 1953 to 1988 I have many fond memories of General Sweeney.

Phalsbourg, France and the many activities of AFT during the years have etched my soul. May he rest in peace. A great man and soldier.

I was reading about his death in the news on yahoo. I am 32 His sensitive mission more than likely saved more lives in the future. I will always remain thankful to people like yourself for the freedom that we all enjoy today. Like Tom Brokaw said in a book that your genearation was truly the greatest generation.

On behalf of my family, we would like to send our deepest regrets on the passing of Charlie. I had the opportunity to due business with Charlie in the early to mid 70's and considered him one of the finest, most honest and caring people I had ever met.

Charlie will always hold a special place in the heart of our family since he bought our daughter her very first pair of shoes which were worn at her christening.

Anyone who had an encounter with Charlie, surely met a man who left a lasting impression.

I had the opportunity to meet and consider Charlie Sweeney a friend while I worked for Laconia Shoe Company, Laconia, NH in the late 60's early 70's. Charlie was always a gentleman... always had a good word for everyone and always made one smile. When I did my two weeks training with my NHNG Artillary unit at Camp Edwards, MA he made arrangements for one of the fathers a guardsman in our unit who flew a private plane to land at Otis Air Force Base. He also let me use his "Generals" cottage during my mid two-weeks training active duty time to give me a break from living in tents.

Charlie made a difference in this world, knew it and knew he had done the right thing... those who knew him will miss him.

My best to his family... he was a good man.

I was a 17 year old civil air patrol Cadet commander at Otis in 1969 when we flew to Wright Patterson AFB from Otis on a C-54. The pilot was General Sweeney and I will never forget meeting him and having a picture taken with him on the aircraft. May he have eternal happiness and peace.
