Charles THERRIEN Obituary

THERRIEN, Charles Known as "Charlie" to many friends and loved ones, Charlie passed away, on September 12, 2025, at the age of 82, in Monterey, CA. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Judy; and daughters, Kristen and Lara. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Keri, in 1976.

Born in Pittsfield, MA, Charlie was the first in his family to attend college and completed his Bachelor and Masters in electrical engineering at MIT in 1965 and was awarded a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from MIT in 1969. He worked for Lincoln Laboratory for seven years, and ultimately pursued a career teaching and advising graduate students at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA between 1981 and 2007. He published three text books in the field of digital and statistical signal processing and served on the leadership of the Asilomar conference "Signals, Systems and Computers," sponsored by IEEE. Charlie was a gifted musician who played bass trombone, tuba and guitar. He was also a skilled photographer, and president of the Boston Camera Club in 1980.

Charlie lived his last six years with Parkinson's disease, but even so, over the last two years he and Judy attended more classical and bluegrass music performances than one can count. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his name can be made to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
