DANIEL HARRINGTON Obituary

HARRINGTON, Daniel Richard

A life-long resident of Haverhill, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, after a six year battle of health complications caused by a stroke. Born in Haverhill on September 23, 1930, he was the son of Daniel R. and Charlotte (Wilmont) Harrington. Dan graduated from St. James High School and

Merrimack College where he was a member of their men's first varsity basketball team. After college, he began his influential career as a public school educator for 45 years in

the City of Haverhill and retired as principal at the Albert B. Consentino School. He shared with each student that crossed his path the love of learning, especially American

History. During the summer months, Dan would spend the majority of his time at Camp Sea Haven on Plum Island, a facility for the recreation and therapy of children stricken

with polio that was founded by his father, who suffered from the crippling disease. After the passing of his father in 1959, Dan and his wife, Norene took over the operations and

continued the work that his parents started until 1972. After he retired from teaching, Dan moved on to become Membership Director of the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce and a proud member of the Haverhill Exchange Club. He was a community leader and overall champion of Haverhill throughout his entire life. He had been honored by the Temple Emanu-el in receiving their "B'nai B'rith Man of the year award and by Senator Marty Meehan as "Greater Haverhill's Irish Man of the Year" and the "Distinguished Citizen Award" from the Yankee Clipper Council Boy Scouts of America. The widower of Norene M. (Crites) who died in 2011, he leaves his children; Michael D. Harrington, of Tamworth, NH, Daniel R. Harrington III and his wife Christine of West Newbury, daughters, Ann M. and her husband, Chuck Lagasse, of Newburyport, Susan M. Harrington, of Haverhill, Maura K. and husband Mark Flaherty of Boston, Jane E. and her husband Chuck Murray, of Groveland, and Amy M. and her husband, Steve Solomon, of Marblehead, thirteen cherished grandchildren; Lauren Karipis and her husband Evan, Christopher MacMillan and his wife Amy, Timothy MacMillan, Megan and Charlie Lagasse, Emily Harrington, Colleen, Erin, and Kelly Murray, Nolan and Brenna Flaherty, Sarah and Daniel Solomon, his great- grandson Brayden Karipis, several nieces and nephews and his brother-in-law Al Wenckus. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the entire staff at the Hannah Duston Healthcare Facility for the care provided to Dan. Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Thursday, August 28, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) HAVERHILL. Alas .... a late entry in Dan's "memories" book ! Only recently discovered the passing of this gentleman-of-gentlemen ! I was fortunate enough to have shared some time with Dan over the years ... first as a counselor at Camp Sea Haven, Plum Island in the summers of 1963 & 64 and shortly thereafter as a teacher in the elementary schools of Haverhill ... finally ending up at his new Consentino Middle school ! He made a strong impression on me during those years and I am indeed sorry to hear of his passing .... RIP ! Bruce Thomson

i remember Mr Harrington very well from my days as a camper at Camp Sea Haven. Also his father, wife and son. He was a great man and did so much for so many kids all those years ago.

So Sorry for your entire family's loss.
May you find strength in his legacy..
He was a wonderful teacher, set an example which exemplified his career. Our paths crossed many many times throughout the years after having him as a "reading teacher in 7 th grade.

I remember Dan Harrington as my uncle Irving Karelis' wonderful friend at The Hannah Duston Home in Haverhill. He taught his daughters well as they also were warm and caring not only for their father but also for those at the home who came into their sphere.
