Atherton, Jr. and wife Sarah of Woburn. Nephew of Marylou Haverty and husband Bob of Woburn. Uncle of James and Abagail Atherton. Cousin of Kaitlin Haverty, Kerrie Bradley and Melissa Coleman. Visitation for relatives and friends at the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322 Main Street, STONEHAM, on Wednesday from 3-8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick's Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham on Thursday at 10 a.m. Interment, Lindenwood Cemetery, Stoneham. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fraternal Order of Fire Fighters Military Veterans, FOFFMV.org

Many years ago, my mom, Lindale Kelly, was a soloist for St. Patricks Church. There were several times when she sang for requiem masses scheduled at 11:30 am after which she would walk home. Her route took her past the Baptist Church in Stoneham where David attended and his mother taught. When David saw my mom, he showed his excitement. Without fail, she would give him a dollar gently wrapping it in his hands. My mom loved David!

I didn't know CPL Atherton personally but it saddens to know that one of our National Guardsmen has been taken away from his family, the Guard, and Fire Station he belonged to. May he rest in everlasting peace and may everyone who loved him be covered fully by the hands of God as they continue to grieve the loss of their loved one.
