David B. Tucker

TUCKER, David B. Age 82, passed away Wednesday morning, April 13, at Caritas Hospital in Norwood, after a brief illness. He lived in retirement in Westwood, where he had resided for many years. Mr. Tucker was born in Boston on February 1, 1929, the son of William and Marion (Thomas) Tucker. He was predeceased by his brothers George and William and his sisters Ruth and Marion. He leaves his nephew, Joseph Crowley, Jr., who has lived with him for many years, and two nieces, Karen Tucker-Barisano of Littleton, Mass., and Sandra J. Duggan of Chicago, Ill. Dave Tucker was educated in Boston schools, and enlisted in the United States Army after high school. He was stationed in Japan during the occupation following World War II, where he began his career in radio, announcing for Armed Forces Radio. After his military service, he was assistant program director of Armed Forces Radio, WLKH. From there he went to station KIST in Santa Barbara, California. He returned to Boston and attended Boston University School of Liberal Arts, earning a degree in Communications. At the same time he worked the early morning stint at WCRB in Waltham, Mass., and was a charter announcer at the college station, WBUR. After graduation, he worked at the old WMEX, where he helped found the "Theater of Beautiful Music." This was followed by a stint teaching a radio course at Wayne University in Detroit, where he also handled public relations. Late in 1958, he returned to WCRB as music editor and later music director, program director and a vice-president of the company. Over the years, he hosted various programs such as Afternoon Symphony, Table at Pops, GTE Concert Hour, Evening Symphony, Operetta Matinee and Showtime in Stereo. He retired from the station in 1995, after 50 years in radio. For over 20 years Mr. Tucker served the town of Westwood as Civil Defense Director and as Chief of Auxiliary Police. He was a faithful communicant at St. Margaret Mary's Church in Westwood. He was a longtime Lions Club member, a lifelong film buff, read enthusiastically about Lucy Borden, and enjoyed cross-country train travel. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Holden, Dunn and Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock St.(off Route 109) WESTWOOD on Monday April 18th from 4-8pm. A Funeral Service will be celebrated in the funeral home on Tuesday morning April 19th at 11am. Interment will be private.
