WHITE, David W. David W. White, lifelong love of classical music. David Winthrop White, of Wellesley and Marlboro, Vermont, died on May 17, 2025, peacefully at home, a day after his 82nd birthday. David was the son of Robert Winthrop White and Margaret Ley Bazeley White. David grew up in Concord, in an academic, intellectual and musical family. His father was a distinguished professor of clinical psychology at Harvard and Director of the Harvard Psychological Clinic and first head of the PhD Program in clincal Psychology at Harvard. He was also an author of the seminal work, The Abnormal Personality, among many other of his works in the academic canon. In 1953, David's parents helped establish the Concord (MA) Orchestra, where his mother served as president of the governing board. His father was an early trustee of both Marlboro College and the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont. David is the great-nephew of Arthur A.C. Hall, the third Episcopal Bishop of Vermont, serving from 1894 to 1929. After attending the Fenn School, David went on to graduate from the Boston Conservatory. David was a beloved member of the Marlboro Music Community in Marlboro, Vermont, for more than 60 years. For decades, as a staff member, David served as a mentor and first employer (or boss) to many of the young people in the Marlboro Music community, where generations of his assistants helped with all manner of logistics for their summer concert series. One of these young people was Christopher Serkin, professor at Vanderbilt and now President and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Marlboro Music, and a grandson of Rudolf Serkin, the famous pianist and co-founder of Marlboro. David had a wide circle of friends. Frank Salomon reflected that "David was beautiful person - caring, kind and smart - and was so dedicated to Marlboro's people and music. He will be missed by many." Another friend, Michael Reingold, echoed this tribute saying that, "David was one of the kindest and most devoted members of the Marlboro community. Since the 1960's, David was a welcoming presence to generations of new Marlboro participants and staff. He will be dearly missed." And Allegra Klein reflected that "David was one of the sweetest and kindest people I ever met. He personified the spirit of Marlboro in everything he did". David will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his unusual kindness and his integrity, he was a true gentleman. David was predeceased by his mother; father; and his beloved younger bother, Timothy White. There will be a Celebration of his Life on Saturday, June 28th, at the Marlboro Campus Center Coffee Shop, 2582 South Rd., Marlboro, Vermont, at 1pm. All are welcome.
