DEAN JOHNSON Obituary

JOHNSON, Dean C. Loving Husband, Brother, Uncle, Friend Local Talk Show Host at WCAP and WBZ Dean Johnson, of Lowell, MA, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at his home in Lowell. Beloved husband of Denyse D. Johnson, cherished brother of Arthur Johnson, II and his wife Juanita, doting uncle to Alexa Loukides and her husband James, Jaime O'Brien and her husband Michael, and Candace Ingersoll and her husband Stephen, and grandnieces, Piper and Clover Ingersoll. Born in Lowell, April 15, 1954 to Bessie (Sideris) and Arthur Vincent Johnson, he graduated from Chelmsford High School. Dean enjoyed summering in Ogunquit, ME at their home in Kennebunkport, affectionately known as the Flamingo House, where Dean and Denyse often collected sand dollars on Goose Rocks Beach. He was a journalist for the Boston Globe and Boston Herald covering concerts, radio shows, and comedy. He interviewed a wide range of public personalities from Walter Cronkite, to Julia Child, and even The Rolling Stones. Creatively, he turned his love for all things food into a weekly restaurant column at the Lowell Sun and Merrimack Valley Magazine. Dean and Denyse could frequently be found dining at any new and notable restaurant along the New England coastline. Most recently, he wrote articles for the Tourist & Town – Kennebunkport's premier magazine. He began his career writing about radio, but Dean later went on to host an overnight radio talk show on WBZ in Boston and WCAP in Lowell. His radio shows gave him the platform to interview personalities, pundits and politicians from around the country. Radio was an outlet for Dean to talk about his quirky interests, music, the arts and anything silly he would come across. A major part of Dean's life was devoted to serving as an elder in the Lowell Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was an integral part of outreach programs for immigrants and provided Bible-based advice to help families and individuals, and frequently spoke at conventions and conferences across New England. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Worldwide Work of Jehovah's Witnesses at https://donate.jw.org/ui/E/donate-home.html#/donate/WW.

Fellow writer, Lowellian here. I not only loved Dean as a friend but admired him as a scribe and especially as a person. Folks speak of someone who will never be replaced. in this case, it's an understatement.

Dean had a way of lighting up every room and filling it with energy. I loved battles of wits with him even though I lost every time. We spent five years together as elders in Lowell, his experience and more importantly his love for the friends has inspired me for years.
When the day comes that Jehovah calls for him, I will be in the very long line to welcome him back.

our thoughts and prayers are with the Johnson family. Dean adopted is Southerners and was a friend to us for decades. He was genuinely a caring person and left such a positive legacy for the rest of his family and friends. Alice in Wonderland will always trigger a memory.

Although I know our separation from our dear friend Dean is temporary, he is sorely missed. Dean was always up for fun, never a cross word, and an amazing orator. I enjoyed spending time with him and Denyse in the congregation, socially, and at the beach. May Denyse be enveloped with the love and support from everyone during this extremely difficult time.

Dean was a mensch and anytime I got to see him or just talk on the phone (back in the day) it was fun. May his memory be a blessing.

I was very sad to hear about Dean's passing. I am so sorry for your loss.
I knew Dean as a listener and caller to his radio shows on WBZ. The world is a kinder, more civil, more decent place because of Dean.

Much love
