DOUGLAS COWLEY Obituary

COWLEY, Douglas Allan Of Barnstable, died November 7, 2018, with loving friends and family members at his side. Doug was the son of Doris and Charles Cowley, late of West Roxbury, where he grew up. He is survived by his brother, Curtis J. Cowley, and his sister-in-law, Lisa Wyman Cowley, of Wellesley, and his niece, Martha Elizabeth Cowley, of Chicago, as well as his long-time friend, Caroline McBurney Howard of Hyannis and his tuxedo cat, Webster. A long-time resident of Sherborn, Doug retired to Barnstable in 2007. Doug was a proud 1958 graduate of Boston Latin School and 1963 graduate of U. Mass. Amherst, after which he entered service in the U.S. Army. Twenty years of employment at John Hancock Life Insurance Co. in Boston followed, during which Doug rose from computer programmer to manage the Hand-Star project for the Group Life Division. After Hancock, he became Managing Director of Far East Marketing for Stratus Computer, traveling throughout Asia and Australia for many years while maintaining a second home in Singapore. Doug was an avid chef who loved to prepare gourmet meals for family and friends, a passionate audiophile, a voracious reader and book collector, and animal and bird lover, whose favorite pastime was arguing what might be termed his "alt-left" political views. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his graveside service Weds at noon at The Gardens Cemetery, Baker Street, West Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, donations, in Doug's memory, to the Boston Latin School Assoc., 27 School St., Suite 300, Boston, MA 02108 would be appreciated. For guestbook, please visit website. Doug and I met in India in 1992 when I was working for a Stratus partner company in India. He was a very kind man, who saw the ambition and hunger in me, and took me under his wing. With him, I got to start our company business in China in 1992, and then to do business in the Far East and in South Africa. When the software provided by my company failed and resulted in Stratus being called into arbitration with the client, he encouraged me to first tell the truth to the Arbitrators. Obviously that did not go down well with my employers who saw this as treachery. Doug then ensured I had an attractive job offer from Stratus in Singapore. That started a great career for me in Stratus, then Ascend, then Lucent, then Alcatel-Lucent. I was in awe of how international his outlook was, his love for all things Asian and Chinese, and his remarkable generosity. A very good man. I am sorry I lost touch with him, But I hope his family know that his memory is cherished. I am sure God has him in His embrace.

I had the opportunity to work with Doug at Stratus Computer. He had the ability to relate to our team members and customers in Hong Kong, Singapore and elsewhere in Asia. He was respected, trusted and "loved" be them. He was often the bridge between HQ and the Stratus Asian offices. He contributed greatly to our success in Asia during the 80's.
