Eleanor BATUYIOS Obituary

BATUYIOS, Eleanor (Johnson) Age 76, of Boston, died at home on June 17, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Eleanor was born in Philadelphia on July 7, 1947 to Mary Dellmuth Johnson and John Herbert Johnson and grew up across the river in Collingswood, NJ. She graduated from Collingswood High School (1965), the University of Delaware (1969), Princeton Theological Seminary (1972) and Quincy College School of Nursing (2000). Her family were members of the Collingswood Presbyterian Church. She shared many happy memories of her childhood days and was especially fond of summering at her grandmother's house in Seaside Heights, NJ, with extended family.

In 1972, Eleanor married Harry Batuyios. They moved together to Boston, where she would live the rest of her life. Together, they raised three children and grew a loving community around them. Their doors were always open and their houses served as frequent gathering spaces for neighbors and friends alike. You were sure to find good company and good food inside. Their treasured vacations at Wrightsville Beach, NC were among their family's happiest times.

Eleanor spent her career working and volunteering in schools and in shelters for unhoused people, initially at Rosie's Place and most impactfully at the Pine Street Inn, where she served as both an advocate in the women's unit and an administrator in PSI's Paul Sullivan Housing. She was known for her patience, for her quiet but fierce commitment and for always lending an ear and a hand to anyone in need.

She leaves behind her children and their spouses, James Batuyios (Courtney Quinn), Frances Batuyios (David Scharfenberg) and John Batuyios. She is also survived by three granddaughters, Eleanor, Scarlett and Quinn. She also leaves her three siblings and their spouses, Bruce Johnson (Alston), Chris Johnson and Paul Johnson (Nevina); her former husband, Harry; and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and dear friends.

Eleanor's life was spent in service to others. She loved unconditionally and without judgment. She was unfailingly welcoming and caretaking. To honor her life's work and her spirit, may we strive to ease one another's suffering, to find beauty in every soul, to always set an extra place at the table and to let love guide us at every turn.

Please join us to celebrate her life and to mourn our loss on October 19, 2024, at 2 pm, at Hope Central Church, 85 Seaverns Ave., Jamaica Plain, MA. All are welcome. To Jimmy, Frannie, John and Harry, How lucky you all were to spend your lives with such a beautiful person. As you probably remember, we spent many days at the Haley school in Roslindale, where we learned about being parents to the most beautiful children in the world. Eleanor taught me so much about how to care, share and love those around me and more importantly she taught me how to teach my children the same things. She was so much fun to be with. She was always one to brighten up your day. She cared so much about people. I envied the joy she found in life. Thanks for sharing her with all she met. Jimmy, I´m so happy that you and Jim´s friendship is still going strong. To you and your family, I send my best. My heart is with you. Janet Hamilton

Eleanor was a mentor and guide to me, decades ago when we worked together in the women´s unit at PSI. Her love and wisdom and gentle guidance were an inspiration to me that has stayed with me throughout my life journeys so far.

Eleanor was a wonderful and shining soul. It was always a joy to talk with her or run into her at Pine. I will miss sharing the world with her.

I had the pleasure of working with the "young Eleanor" (as she was fondly referred to) at Paul Sullivan Housing many years ago. She was always warm, kind and compassionate and she will be missed. Sending love and prayers to her family and friends. Warmly, Jackie Albrikes
