ELIZABETH BISHOP Obituary

BISHOP, Elizabeth, R. Elizabeth "Betsy" Reynolds Bishop died, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. She was born in Brookline, MA on October 10, 1936, to George and Ruth Reynolds. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, the Reverend John "Jack" Jacob Bishop. Betsy adored and was cherished by her large, loving family. She leaves her children, John and his wife, Wendy Strothman, Douglas, and his wife, Cara Adler, Elizabeth and her husband, Don Bjelke and Mark and his wife, Sarah Coco. Her grandchildren, Michael Bishop and his wife, Vanessa Vega, Christopher Bishop; and his children, Benjamin and Samuel; Margaret Metzger, her husband, George Kontaroudis; and their children, Thalia and Artemis; Andrew Metzger and his wife, Kate Hensley; and their children, Walt and Louis; Nathan Bishop and his wife, Sheena Anand; Rachel (Ray) Bishop, her wife, Amy; and their family, Joseph, Alise and Miranda; Kristine Alach; Jessica Alach, and her son, Jackson; Rebecca Bishop and her husband, Andrew Donnelly; and Jacob Bishop, his wife, Sydney Bishop; and their children, Linda and Ellis. Betsy attended Radcliffe College, Northeastern University and Boston College, where she received her Masters in Social Work. She volunteered at the Charles Street Jail, prior to receiving her MSW and then worked at the MGH Chelsea Health Center, specializing in child protection. After moving to Cape Cod, she had a private therapeutic practice and was a consulting specialist at Cape Cod Academy. She spent her career advocating for people in need, whether incarcerated women, children and their families or people working through the challenges they faced in their lives. She shared her husband, Jack's, passion for Civil Rights and Social Justice and supported his work in parish ministry. Betsy finished college and graduate school while caring for four teenagers. She could make a weeknight dinner for 15 parishioners with little effort. Once she painted the entire interior and exterior of a four-bedroom house by herself. Drawing from a huge repertoire of songs, she would launch into one whenever reminded of it. She was particularly prone to laughter. There will be a Memorial Service at the Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham, on Saturday, April 5, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Episcopal City Mission, the Pine Street Inn or the Resident Care Fund at Linden Ponds.

Rev. David and Pamela Purdy

February 2, 2025

Betsy and I have been Face Book friends for years. We were neighbors in Winchester. My husband Rev. David Purdy and her husband Jack were friends.
When I saw no reaction to the Bishop Budde Presidential Prayer Breakfast remarks, I was afraid that something serious had happened to Betsy. Sure enough I googled Obituaries Elizabeth Bishop and there I found the sad news! We were such good FB friends and I will miss her so! RIP dear Betsy!
