In addition my memories of my grandfather's kindness, and my respect for his patriotism, I will always hold admiration for my grandfather's resolve; how he held out hope in spite of conditions that seemed to conspire against him. In my experience, my grip on hope has been fragile, often unsure and conciliatory, and despite all of society's wisdom, and that omnipresent maxim "Never give up hope!", I find that in the turbid currents of confusion and adversity, hope can be easily compromised. Hope for recovery is difficult to maintain when afflicted by any illness, and reflects a strong, certain character. My grandfather faced what would be a formidable assault on anyone's confidence: names, faces, and cherished memories drifted away from him, leaving him with no discernible horizon, no obvious gleaming beacon. His unflagging persistence amidst such engulfing uncertainty should be remembered and carried on by all of us, not only in honor of my grandfather's example, but to the benefit of ourselves and those around us.

I know you are looking down on us all today, Dad. We are looking forward to seeing you again one day. I hope we did all we could to see that you made your journey peacefully. There are a million things that going through my mind about you. I want you to know that you were loved and were a good father. You touched a lot of peoples lives and shared a lot of good times with us. In your own way, you showed us that there really are a lot of good things in this world. Thanks for being my Dad. Love you, Bill
