I remember well the fun times we had with Uncle Henry and Aunt Selma at their hom ein Somerset. We'd spent Sat afternoon together and have usual tea and cake. It was always so wonderful for the family to be together.

We always enjoyed our family visits with Henry and the Gatterman family. We shall miss him. He used to sit in the living room talking with Bob Levitov and my father. Now all three of them are gone. I hope they are keeping each other company in heaven.

we were so sorry to hear about Uncle Henry's death. Although it has been a while since we last saw him we hold fond memories of our times together. Especially prominent in my mind is our family get togethers at the house in somerset where the "children" got to sit at the special children's table with the Hawaiian table cloth. Henry was always so kind to us. He was a good listener and we will never forget him. fondly Lynn (and David Shriber)

Henry as a young baseball player

My father was a quiet man. I don't remember him every getting very angry, yelling, screaming, or being violent in any way. He was a calm, thoughtful, and peaceful person. He was someone who would listen to you, and someone who loved to tell stories.

My father would paint pictures with words, and would describe his and my mother's life in Hawaii during World War II. Some of my favorite stories were about his work on the submarines, about my mother being attacked by a spider in the shower, and about going on board the ships hit by the Japanese right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He also told stories about when he was young, and like the kids in the "The Little Rascals" movies, he was always getting into trouble, usually led on by my Uncle Leo, who would convince him to go shovel snow off the trolley tracks, or to sneak into the Oriental Theatre to see a movie. They were funny stories, entertaining stories, and thoughtful stories, and I always enjoyed hearing them.

My father loved sports, and played on several baseball teams in the Mattapan area. I don't remember what teams he was on, but I have a picture of him in his baseball uniform, looking happy and proud. Later in life, one of his joys was to go to the Pawtucket Red Sox games with his son-in-law, Charlie.

My father loved children, and when we lived in Maine in the 1950's, he would take a bunch of kids in the neighborhood out to go fishing or on other activities on the weekend. I remember that my brother and sister, and the other kids would catch fish, but I never did. It was only later that I found out that my father was afraid I would hurt myself with a fishhook, so he put a bent nail on my fishing pole.

My father taught me many things – he helped me with my homework and taught me to throw a ball. He also taught me about adult responsibilities and a strong work ethic. My father got me a job in the factory where he was a textile chemist, and there I was able to earn money to help put me through college.

Henry Gatterman was a human being like the rest of us, with strengths and with flaws. He was a good father to me, and I will always cherish his memory.
