JAMES GUTMANN Obituary

GUTMANN, James "Jim" Frederick Of Boston, Massachusetts and Eastchester, New York, passed away suddenly on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at the age of 58. Born on September 26, 1966, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Jim was the beloved son of the late Winthrop N. and Mary Ann Mullens Gutmann. The youngest of seven siblings, Jim cherished his upbringing in Lanesborough and carried with him a deep fondness for time spent with his brothers and sisters. He carried himself with humility, brought such joy and laughter wherever he went and truly loved life. Jim graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Pittsfield, before earning his Bachelor's degree from the Wentworth Institute of Technology and later his Master's degree from New York University. A respected leader in the field of construction and real estate development, Jim spent more than 25 years building an exceptional career with Hines. His work also left a lasting mark on the skylines of New York City, New Jersey and Boston, with notable projects, including the Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium, 745 Seventh Avenue, 30 Hudson, Morgan Stanley Data Center, One Jackson Square and One Vanderbilt. At the time of his passing, he served as Vice President of Construction, overseeing the Hines South Station Tower in Boston - one of the city's most ambitious and complex undertakings. Jim's passion for construction began in childhood. At age four, he could often be found in the backyard, crafting miniature roads, bridges and dams in the dirt. A pivotal moment came when his oldest brother, Peter, took him to the local hardware store to buy concrete for a backyard dam project. From there, Jim's imagination and ambition grew - leading to the extraordinary professional legacy he would leave behind. Being a father was Jim's proudest role. He poured his energy and love into raising his daughters, instilling in them the values he held dear. Through them - and through the next generation - he built a foundation that endures. He is survived by his three daughters and their spouses: Chloe and Connor Lang and granddaughter, Eloise Lang of Wichita, Kansas, Anna and Tanner Mumm and their son due in June, of Lincoln, Nebraska and Emma Gutmann and Corey McKeon and children, also of Lincoln, Nebraska. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Catherine Gutmann of Lincoln, Nebraska; his loving partner, Lora of New York, New York; his brothers and their spouses, Peter and Anita Gutmann of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Charles and Irene Gutmann of Suffern, New York, and Mark and Jamie Gutmann of Morgantown, West Virginia; and his brothers-in-law, Edward Morenz of Keene, New Hampshire and Neil Eddy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Jim was a beloved uncle to 27 nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Winthrop N. and Mary Ann Gutmann; his sisters, Catherine Eddy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and Winifred M. Morenz DVM of Keene, New Hampshire; and a brother, Robert J. Gutmann of Lenox Dale, Massachusetts. Family, colleagues and friends are kindly invited to Visit with Jim's family in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, 1400 Washington Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02118, on Monday, June 2, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the church at 11:00 a.m. To livestream Jim's funeral please visit: www.harborview.live For those who feel inclined, contributions in Jim Gutmann's memory may be made to the Wichita Art Museum at wam.org If you would like to leave a message of condolence or share pictures with Jim's family, please visit: bellodeafuneralhome.com Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home 376 Washington St. Brookline, MA 02445 617-277-7652
