James Tierney Obituary

TIERNEY, James Patrick Age 55, of Arlington, June 4. Father, brother, son, friend and advocate fought and lived beyond his life expectancy of five years after an accident left him spinal cord injured in 1971. Born and raised in Pawtucket, RI, Jim was traumatically injured at age 15 and spent many years hospitalized and in several rehab and nursing centers. Shortly after his injury, Jim was institutionalized at Zambrano State Hospital in Rhode Island and was instrumental in developing Patient's for Progress, an advocacy movement to improve accessibility and the food at the institution. In 1981 Jimi moved to Boston to participate in Boston Center for Independent Living's Transitional Living Program. The program provided residential housing and skills training to its residents to learn the basics of living independently. After he completed this program he obtained his own apartment and lived independently with Personal Care Attendants. The Personal Care Attendant (PCA) program is a program whereby the disabled individual hires and trains the PCA to perform personal care and assist with activities of daily living to maintain the individual in their own home. Soon after moving to Boston, Jimi began working at Boston Center for Independent Living (BCIL) as a skills trainer thereby teaching other disabled individuals to live independently. Jimi worked for BCIL full time for many years in several different capacities. Jimi was the epitomy of independence. He never said I can't, and never complained. He took pride in his work, drove a modified van and overcame years of physical ailments that he rallied back from over and over again. Jim met his former wife Mary in 1988 and they married in 1991. They spent several happy years together enjoying each other's company, sharing his philosophy for leading a happy, productive life and traveling. In 1997 he saw the brave battle of his wife through a complicated pregnancy and premature birth of his daughter Kelsey. Kelsey was born in 1997 at 2 lbs and 2 oz. His daughter was his pride and joy and he reveled in her every milestone up until his passing. He leaves his daughter Kelsey Tierney of Arlington, his former wife and confidant Mary Tierney of Arlington, his mother Shirley Brown of Rhode Island, brothers Larry Tierney, Eddie Tierney, John Tierney, Gary Brown and sisters Melissa Brown and Kathy Vorse. Also survived by several nieces and nephews, friends and colleagues. Relatives and friends are invited to visit in The DeVito-O'Donnell Funeral Home, 1145 Mass Avenue, ARLINGTON Tuesday 4:00 to 8:00pm. Funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim's memory to Boston Center for Independent Living, 60 Temple Place, Boston, MA 02115. www.devitofuneralhomes.com

R.I.P. Jimi! To the Tierney family: I am so sorry for your loss. I just found out yesterday of Jimi's passing. I worked at BCIL during the late 80s thru 1994. Jimi was a co-worker for the first 4 years and eventually ended up being my supervisor. I had great respect for Jimi. His passion for the well being of consumers was superb. He was a true advocate for people with disabilities and he will be missed.

My condolences go out to Jimi's family. His actions spoke 1,000 more, than his quiet demeanor. I am grateful to have had the pleasure of knowing Jimi for four years at BCIL.

Quiet in deed,
Deep in thought,
Jimi knew what they needed.
He always fought
For them in all that he sought.
He too understood
The world could be cruel.
He vastly improved
Life daily with every move
He created solutions.
An everyday hero one revolution
At a time,
Jimi was mighty fine.

Jimi was a great man, leader and mentor. He clearly got "it", he lived IL and cared greatly for others in the disability community. We're blessed to have shared him with Mary, Kelsey, and his extended family.

The compassion, skill, strength and professionalism Jimi brought to life will not be matched. Thanks for showing us all that important people can still succeed without greed or ego. Thanks for providing 20+ years of true class as a friend and colleague. You will be missed. Love and condolences to your family.

I was Jimi and Mary's babysitter for about 9.5 years. The Tierneys became more than friends to me..... they became family and I will always love them. I watched Kelsey grow from the time she was 18 mos old to the beautiful teenager she is now, and I saw how much joy she brought to Jimi. Jimi struggled with his health for so long, and although it saddens me greatly to hear of his passing, I find comfort in knowing that he is at peace and free of pain.

Mary and Kels, love you and I am here for you. Jimi, you will be greatly loved and missed. Gone but never forgotten. RIP

Mary, Kelsey and the Tierney family,

Please accept Charlie's and my condolences on Jimi's passing. Jimi will be fondly remembered for his dry wit, great tan and of course his commitment to living a full and independent life. Kelsey, he was so proud of you and when we talked over the years we always spoke of you. To you he was your dad but you might not know that he was a hero to the many people he helped over his many years at BCIL. Be proud of him, as he was of you. He was a true advocate.

A great advocate, administrator and fighter. Jimi was the man behind the scenes who made sure the trains ran on time and budgets were met. He was quiet and never liked the flashy stuff, but if not for him BCIL would not be where it is today. He was literally the man who made it all work.

We lose too many of the good ones too early in life. Jimi is one of the good ones.
