JEAN KAVANAGH Obituary

KAVANAGH, Jean (O'Neill) Of Wakefield, MA, known to many families as "Jean Marie," passed away in her home at the age of 78. Born and raised in Watertown, MA, the beloved daughter of the late Daniel and Jean (Montague) O'Neil. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 35 years, C. Ronald Kavanagh; her eldest son, Patrick Kavanagh; her sisters, Catherine "Kitty" and Ann Marion O'Neil; as well as her brother Daniel O'Neil. In 1961, Jean graduated from Rosary Academy in Watertown alongside a group of girls she would remain close friends with for the next 60 years. She attended Waltham Hospital School of Nursing and graduated with her LPN in 1968. She devoted many years to the care and nursing of senior members of our communities through her work at the Dexter House in Malden, Normady House in Melrose, and Sunrise Living in Lynnfield. She brought light and a stiff cup of coffee, into many lives through her work as a nurse. Jean married her sweetheart "Ronnie" in 1969. Ron and Jean really knew how to throw a party and were always entertaining and traveling with friends and family. Each year they would break the previous year's record of how many pounds of corned beef, potatoes and cabbage they would cook and serve for St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Cookouts and holidays starring Jean Marie's famous meatballs were a regular draw and summers down the Cape remained a highlight for the family each year. Those who knew Jean could count on a captivating story, a playfully delivered joke, a strong cup of coffee, or a tale from long ago, that might have been forgotten until Jean's long memory pulled it back again into existence. She lived life on her own terms and was never one to stand idly around when she could be gardening, painting, wallpapering, cooking, visiting, or sharing a meal with friends and family. She took great pleasure in old movies, musicals, and a well-woven mystery. Often the unofficial photographer for family and friends, she operated the home movie camera boldly from which she created hours of footage that she gifted to others. She is survived by her dear sisters Patricia Landers of Framingham and Genevieve Cross of Tewksbury; her brother, Gerald O'Neil and his wife Mary of Woburn; and her sister-in-law Sr. Madeline Kavanagh formerly of Charlestown. She leaves behind her daughter, Colleen Getty, and her husband George of Wakefield, MA; as well as her son, Ryan Kavanagh, and his wife Nicola of Salem, MA. "Nana Bean" (as her grandchildren affectionately referred to her) will be sorely missed by her three loving granddaughters Alice, Clara and Madeline and her cherished grandson Charles. Jean leaves behind several beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins from Boston to Alberta, Canada. She will be dearly missed by her high school girlfriends from Rosary Academy, as well as long-time friends and neighbors on Friend Street. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield, on Tuessday, at 10am, followed by an interment at Forest Glade Cemetery, in Wakefield. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., WAKEFIELD, on Monday, from 4-7pm. For obit, directions & guestbook, www.mcdonsldfs.com . If you would like to honor our mother-bring a meal to someone in need and think of something humorous to say that will make them smile during your visit. Those who knew our mother knew a woman who took time out to bring joy and food into the lives of those who needed it most. She was a one-woman meals-on-wheels and for that reason we ask that in lieu of flowers, you direct any gifts in Jean's memory to the Mystic Valley Elder Services (Meals on Wheels), 300 Commercial St. #19, Malden, MA 02148 or www.mves.org

We are so sad to hear about Jean. She was always so good to our family -dropping off a meal when a new baby arrived and will be sorely missed. My mother always would tell me she was going out with the girls from Rosary- their friend network kept my mother sane through the last couple of years. We are thinking of you.

Jean was one of my Mother's closest childhood friends so she is part of many happy memories, Bunker Hill day and St Patricks's Day and at my wedding- in this picture. Jean was kind, fun and generous - she was a great sport when Ronnie jumped in to be our impromptu wedding photographer & he took a detour from the reception to the Boston Gardens to take beautiful photos that we never would had if not for them.
We will miss her. Your family are in our prayers. Love, Beth (Rinaldi)

Jean left a big impact on me for someone I only knew initially as my grandma´s neighbor (and later as someone I helped with yard work).

While most will note her contagious energy and easy spirit, I´ll also add that she proved to be one of the toughest people I´ve ever met. From mounting health problems to unbearable personal grief, she endured more in the last few years alone than most will in a lifetime. I´ll always be inspired by the grace and resiliency she showed to the very end.

A wonderful aunt and godmother. She will be missed greatly. She was a wonderful aunt, godmother, wife, mother, friend and colleague. Our family will not be the same without her. I loved her with all my heart. God bless you Colleen and Ryan. Love, Kelly

Please accept our sincere condolences for your loss. "Jean Marie" was evidently one of those marvelous souls with a big heart and great love and compassion. Colleen, when my mother died, you posted this statement to me, "Grief takes up all the space in one's head." You are right. And I heard a similar quote at the funeral of a close friend a few weeks ago, "Grief is just love with no place to go," which is why we feel so adrift. Know that we love you and your extended family, and send you prayers for a peaceful soul. - Sally and Phillip Chetwynd

As we celebrate the life of a wonderful, kind and thoughtful woman, I join with her family in mourning her passing. Jean made a difference in so many ways. Fond memories of our days at Rosary Academy. Her sense of humor, sweet singing voice and story telling will be missed. So happy she was with us for our 60th in September. Rest in peace.

Jean was a truly wonderful person. We did enjoy her funny stories and of course we always laughed that she had "The Jacket " on every year. This past reunion we asked her how she stored it as there were absolutely no moth holes in it after 60 years! She was the Best. My love and prayers to you, Jean.

I spent many weekends with Jean at Jackie's house at the cape and also one very memorable trip to Karen's in Florida where she always had us in hysterics. She was an honorary part of our Aquinas group. The last time I saw Jean was outside the Holy Trinity Chapel in Dennisport after mass with Colleen and her beautiful grandchildren. Her winning smile and wonderful sense of humor will be missed and never forgotten.
