JOAN R. VAUGHAN

1922 - 2018

VAUGHAN, Joan R. Of Prides Crossing, Massachusetts and Mt. Desert, Maine died peacefully in sleep August 19, 2018 at her home in Pretty Marsh, and is now with her beloved Sam, who predeceased her in 2012. Surviving Joany are three children Allan Pinkerton Vaughan, Joanie Vaughan Ingraham, and Henry Loring Vaughan, their respective spouses Gail Hamilton Vaughan, Timothy Alexander Ingraham, and Ruth Glidden Vaughan, and niece and daughter-in-law Cecily Vaughan. She was predeceased by her eldest son, Benjamin Hallowell Vaughan. She also leaves three grandchildren, Christopher Samuel Vaughan, Alexander Revell Ingraham, his wife Katrina Glaude, and Samuel Douglas Ingraham and his wife Elizabeth Preysner. Her grandson Benjamin Hallowell Vaughan predeceased her. Joany was also a second mother to many of her children's friends.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on October 9, 1922 to Alexander Hamilton Revell and Isabel Watkins Revell, she attended Lake Forest Country Day School and the Masters School, Dobbs Ferry N.Y. On February 22, 1941 Joany and Sam were married, and embarked upon a lifetime of travels to Maine and all over the world. She learned to sail and the couple cruised with friends and daysailed in Maine for many decades. She loved tennis, and was very proud of having once won the Women's Doubles Championship at the Eastern Yacht Club, where she and Sam were longtime members. On Friday afternoons she could be found in her season seat at Symphony Hall in Boston, and she shared Sam's love of Jazz. Joany taught Sunday School for many years at St. John's Episcopal Church in Beverly Farms, MA, and volunteered at Beverly Hospital and for the American Red Cross as a nurse's aide for 40 years.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Beverly Farms, MA. on October 13 at 11 AM.
