JOEL WEINSTEIN Obituary

WEINSTEIN, Joel Joel Brant Weinstein June 17, 1950 – June 27, 2021 Joel Brant Weinstein passed away unexpectedly on June 27, 2021. Joel was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1950 to Shirley and Irving Weinstein. He was the oldest of two children. Joel grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens, where he lived when he met Sherry, his wife of 48 years. Joel earned an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from City University of New York City College and an MBA from Western New England University. He began his career with Digital Equipment Corporation in Springfield, MA and then Colorado Springs, CO, where his oldest daughter, Marci, was born. Joel then transitioned to the medical device field and joined Advanced Technology Laboratories in Seattle, WA, where his youngest daughter, Elissa, was born. The family eventually moved to Framingham, MA, where Joel became a founding member of the management team at Hologic. Joel was a marketing expert in medical imaging and women's health, leading four other medical device start-up companies. He was an elected Director of Mass Medic, and in his "retirement" actively participated in the med-tech incubator CIMIT, served as a lecturer at M.I.T. and industry events, and served on the Board of Directors of four early and growth stage medical device companies. Joel was also a talented musician. He played guitar, bass, piano and organ, and in his youth was a member of a band that opened for groups including The Angels, The Shirelles, The Young Rascals, and The Vanilla Fudge. Joel also developed a fierce hobby for classic cars and loved hanging out with his car buddies. Above all, Joel was passionate about his friends and family, and cherished his role as "Papa" to his three grandkids. Joel is survived by his loving wife, Sherry; his two daughters and their spouses, Marci and Ryan and Elissa and Ben; and his grandchildren, Avery, Chloe, and Conor. He will be dearly missed. Joel was a dear sweet human being with formidable talents in finance, engineering, music with a vision of what could be. He helped many people in his life, brought beauty to the world, and was an example of what a real human is supposed to do. I will miss him greatly.

I worked with Joel in the medical device industry. He spoke at a couple of conferences my company, StarFish Medical, organized, once rising in the predawn hours to fly across the continent to speak and then fly back the next day. He also referred some of our best speakers over the years. He was also an advisor to a medical device startup I am involved with. I loved the energy and passion he brought to every meeting. I was looking forward to working more closely with him in the next stages. While I knew something about his car history from the trophies on his bookcase I had no idea about his rock and roll talents. He was quite a man. I can only imagine the big role he played in his family and in his other communities. Rest in Peace Joel. My deepest condolences to the family.

Sherry
The Joel we came to know (and love) these past few years was certainly his own person. His talents far exceeded the ones we as relatively new friends came to know. His passion and knowledge of antique cars was to us a real treat. We will miss those spur of the moment times when those 60´s memories were brought back through our antique car discussions. The Joel we know will always be just around the corner.

I was there when he passed. He doesn't know me nor I him but we are both car guys. I mourned for about 1.5 hrs until i began to admire him and the lesson he gave us. Specifically that morning he had the ideal shady parking spot, had a beautiful Thunderbird, it was wonderful Sunday morning and he was with his friends talking car stuff and clearly enjoying himself. The last thing to pass through his mind were thoughts of satisfaction, excitement and joy due to him indulging in one of the things he loved. The lesson he taught me of course is do what you love, with those you love and if you are lucky like him your last moments on earth might be while doing it!. RIP and thank you Joel.
