JOHN BROOME Obituary

BROOME, John Lewis Of Marshfield, formerly of Quincy and South Boston, passed away peacefully at home, after a long courageous battle with coronary heart disease - systemic cardiomyopathy- COPD and cancer, on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at the age of 73. Son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Devlin) Broome. He is survived by his wife Paula (O'Brien); sons Kevin, Timothy, and Patrick; daughter-in-law Jacquelyn; and granddaughter, Eleanor; devoted brother of Edward, Evelyn DeBellis, Joseph (Barbara), Helen, Julie, Jean (Michael) Baker, James (Dorothy), Katherine (Peter) Fenton, Paul, the late Ann (Dwight) Farmer; and many nieces and nephews. John loved his family and his goal was to give his sons the best educational and religious opportunities he could offer. And that he did. They have made him proud. John will be greatly missed by those who were lucky enough to know him. Born in South Boston to a big working class Irish family, his life was defined by family, overcoming challenges, working hard and most especially being kind to others along the way. He was many things to many people. He started working at an early age and never stopped. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as "boots on the ground" reconnaissance, doing TDY in the Philippines, being one of the first in the tunnels of Cambodia and traversing the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Once he returned to the U.S., he lived a life of service to others, whether in the Service, on service calls, or simply helping others. As the founder of Broome's Heating and later, the Heating Co., he was an entrepreneur and go-getter, available to his customers at any time day or night. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Christine Parish Church, 1295 Main Street (Rte. 3A), Marshfield on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Masks are required in the church. John earned several recommendations, honors and awards, including a Purple Heart, while serving his three and a half tours in Vietnam. He will be buried with military honors in the National Cemetery in Bourne with a private family Service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in John's name to the Norwell VNA and Hospice, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061, Sowing Seeds, P.O. Box 1001, Marshfield, MA 02050, St. Christine Parish Church in Marshfield, or to a charity of your choice. In lieu of donations, you may also consider sending his family a story about John to help us remember him and to help us know him as you did.
