JOHN CLIFFORD Obituary

CLIFFORD, John Robert Age 79, of Cambridge, died peacefully, on April 20, after a lengthy illness. He leaves his wife, Pat Glynn, who was with him when he passed; his children, Frank, wife, Monika; and daughter, Kaya; and Vanessa; his brothers, Doug & Sandy, Dan & Margi and Robert; many nieces and nephews, cousins, lots of friends, admirers, comrades, and detractors. He was predeceased by his brother Roger. John was well-known throughout Cambridge and a mentor to many. John was a Marine Corp veteran of the American War in Vietnam and a Purple Heart recipient. John was proud to have been a Marine while being just as strongly opposed to American wars from Vietnam until now. John was a 1974 graduate of UMass-Boston and Hudson High School in 1961. Perhaps best known as the owner of the Green Street Grill, where camaraderie and jazz were outdone by the food. John was also a former labor and political organizer, youth worker and for a short time after college, a teacher. John worked for Cambridge Mayor Ken Reeves as the Education Liaison when he retired from the restaurant. His legacy will be his loyalty to his family, friends, and community. Burial services will be private. A Celebration of John's Life will be held on Sunday, April 23, at Sonia's (at the Middle East Restaurant), 10 Brookline Street, Central Square, Cambridge, from 1:00 - 4:00 PM.

John was very good to me as I arrived in Boston from Ireland. He took me under his wing and we had some great times together. He brought me to many sporting events whilst I was there and even flew to Belfast with my belongings when I could not get back to the US.
I am truly sorry to hear of his passing and I will light a candle for him and his family.
RIP a chara, Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dilis.

I'm so sad to learn of John's death. I worked for John for a couple of years at Charlie's Tap many years ago when when he set about my education by telling me that reading To the Finland Station was an essential part of the induction for the job. He's probably still laughing in the way that only he could! The world is a lesser place for his passing.

John was a great friend. He was the kind of friend that you could ask for any favor and he would do anything for you. He always loved a party and was great fun (and an occasional troublemaker). I miss the evenings in his bar, working with him on the Central Square Worlds Fair, summer trips to Block island, and spending time at parties with his wonderful family.

Dearest Pat, Vanessa, Frankie and all the Cliffords - we extend our deepest sympathies from Dublin, Ireland. When John came to Ireland in the early 1970´s and met Neil McCafferty and I he changed the course of our lives, encouraging us to come to Boston, opening his heart and his network of friends and contacts to us, and helping us with college and jobs. We had so many adventures and great times. His support and that of all the Cliffords is a shining example of how to make the world a better place. Let us celebrate John - all our love, respect and gratitude from Deirdre, Roisín, and Dairíne McCafferty and families.

John was a friend and brother who will be sorely missed. He was part of a lifelong fraternity of those who served in the American war in Vietnam and returned home to publicly oppose it. A legacy of courage and public service that defined much of his life.

John was an amazing person. He was a patriarch to us cousins and the conduit to our gathering. Thank you John. There's a piece missing from our family's hearts. Much love to Pat, Frank and Vanessa.

John was the husband of my good friend Pat. I worked with Pat at AFSCME in Washington, DC. From the moment we met she played a big role in my life. The stories she told of her husband John and their children portrayed a loving, kind and close family. Even though we are retired I would check in with Pat to see how everyone was doing. The last trip John and Pat took together to meet their grandchild was one that I´m sure holds a special place in Pat´s heart.
John will be missed by many but rest assured he lived a life that anybody would love to have had.
