JOHN MCCARTHY Obituary

McCARTHY, Dr. John Edward Born to Edward and Catherine McCarthy on October 10, 1952 in New York City, died suddenly on May 14, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Laura; children, Sean (Lauren) McCarthy, Sarah (Todd) Pauling, Daniel (Kelly Ann) McCarthy, Justin (Jenna) McCarthy, Brendan (Emilie) Emerson and Aislyn (Chris) Emerson; grandchildren, Isla, Dexter, Zoe, Marielle, Brooke, Eric, Poppy, Thomas, Grant and Wyatt; and his brothers, Edward, James, Thomas, Timothy and Joseph. Raised in River Edge, NJ, John excelled as a scholar and high hurdler in high school holding many records. Dr. McCarthy graduated from Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School. He completed his internship and residency at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and served as a physician at the North End Medical Clinic in Boston. John later joined Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, as a primary care and emergency room physician, where he worked for almost 40 years until his death. John was full of life and non-stop energy. When not working across the various departments at Lahey, you would find him engrossed in gardening, snapping pictures of his grandchildren, playing with his dogs or immersed in a good book with a glass of wine by his side. On his weekends off, John and his wife, Laura, often walked their dogs on Cape Cod at low tide to enjoy the sunset. He was totally devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family and patients. Donations in John's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society for CLL research. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

We were great friends in high school and spent years in the same Boy Scout Troop and worked summers with for the parents of another good friend. I recall his happiness at the birth of Sean. As too often happens lost contact with him. It is wonderful to hear he had such a full life and clearly did so much good. He likely stayed his 16 year old self.

My thoughts and prayers are with the McCarthy Family. Dr McCarthy was my PCP since I the late 1980's. Having grown up in Burlington I still traveled to Lahey from New Hampshire for regular doctor appointments. During my most recent visit Dr. McCarthy joked with me that I was one of "his oldest patients". He then chuckled and pardoned himself saying that I was one of his original patients. Dr. McCarthy was one of the kindest people I've ever met. He will truly be missed by everyone that knew him.

I was truly saddened to learn of Dr.McCarthy’s death. He was kind, compassionate yet professional. Throughout the years I always enjoyed our conversations. He never “rushed” the appointment and I knew I was in good hands. I send sincere condolences to his family, the medical community and his patients. M.Kuschel

I am so heartbroken to hear of Dr. McCarthy's passing. He was one of a kind and leaves such a legacy on this earth in terms of the people he care for over the years. He treated three generations of my family with the highest level of service. He had the best bedside manner. My grandmother loved going to see him, and I'm certain he helped my uncle live longer than he otherwise might have. I trusted his advice. It was obvious to me that he genuinely cared about his patients, above all. A model doctor. Rest in peace, Dr. McCarthy!

"Dr. Mac" was my PCP for almost 25 years. I first met him in the Emergency Room after my son scratched my cornea. He became my PCP soon thereafter. He was my friend. As noted by so many people, it never felt like it was just an exam. It was always a conversation about our families, your dogs, skiing and most recently, your ill-fated EV test drive. He was so personable and I will miss him dearly. My sincere condolences to the entire McCarthy Clan.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Just reading the comments of his friends and Patients are a true statement to the amazing man Dr John McCarthy . All of our hearts are broken and filled with sorrow, He will be greatly missed but will live on in all of our hearts and thoughts. I am hoping that the planned celebration of life for John will be posted for all wishing to attend. We all have such wonderful stories and memories to share. His legacy will live on with all of us that he touched in his dedication to heal the sick but he was so much more than that as he was part of every family that he served which was above and beyond the call of duty. He took that extra time that was so special to every patient as he sincerely cared and you became friends for life with him. It was how he made you feel that was so special to his practice and even if you were hesitant to follow his advise you were still friends. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten Amen

To the Family of Dr. John McCarthy:
I am truly sorry for your loss. Dr. McCarthy was my PCP at Lahey for about 30 years. He was a very caring, kind and competent doctor. He patiently went over my page of notes for each annual visit and called me "kiddo" which always made me smile even though I suspected that he wasn´t that much older than myself. I will miss him dearly. May the memories and love fill your hearts and carry you through this difficult time. In peace, Terri SooHoo

I am completely heartbroken to hear of the passing of Dr. McCarthy. My soul is just so, so sad. He has been my primary care physician for over 30 years. I always enjoyed seeing him so much for my annual physical. He's known me since I was 23. He was always so personable and we would often chat about family and our dogs. He always remembered things that we talked about and would follow up with me. One thing I always loved about him being my Dr. was that I knew he genuinely cared. He was that guy that would pull up his stool and would truly listen to what your concerns were. Always made eye contact, (those caring blue eyes) with so much compassion. He'd always greet me with "Hi Kid, what's going on" I'm going to miss him so much. I will never find another Dr. like him. He truly was the best! My heart goes out to his family. Thoughts and prayers. Leahy Clinic lost a great one. May he rest in sweet heavenly peace. God bless you Doc! Fondly, Kimberly Blake-Corn

He was a kind, compassionate doctor with a wonderful bedside manner who was always a gentleman. At the end of every visit he said his usual "ok kiddo." Besides being our physician, he was our friend. I remember Dr. McCarthy as warm and caring. Years ago I found myself in the emergency room with what seemed to me a rather minor infection. Dr. McCarthy examined me and recommended an oral antibiotic. I asked him if it was really necessary. His response: "You´re worth it." After that I was fortunate to have him as my PCP for the rest of my career at Lahey.

I am very saddened to hear about the passing of Dr. John MacCarthy. I was one of his patients for many years, and I can testify to what good man he was in life. Mind you, I wasn´t one of his best patients, in the manner of following his very good advice. I found Dr. MacCarthy to be a very knowledgeable, professional, and kind person, and that is the best anyone can ask for. He was always on the go, but he never once denied me his complete attention. To his Family and friends, my deepest condolences, I´ve only had a peek at what you all knew. Jack Judge

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

Dr. McCarthy has been my primary care physician for over twenty years. During that time, he also became my friend. He was an exceptional human being, as well as an excellent doctor. We always got around to talking about my medical issues, but he also took the time to see where I was in my life. We´d talk about books, travel, pretty much everything.
I will miss him deeply.
God bless.
