John Seiler Obituary

81, of Wayland, MA, died suddenly on August 20th, on a favorite lake in Maine. Born March 23, 1927 in Newton, MA. Married to Catherine W. Seiler until her death in 2003. Graduated Harvard College, Harvard Business School, and the Harvard School of Design. Professor, Consultant, Architect, Mediator, Lobsterman. Survived by daughter Marcia, her husband Keith and their children Hallie and Lucas, all of Harvard, MA. Son Matthew, his wife Russlyn and their three daughters Charlotte, Catherine, and Hope of New Canaan, CT, and West Falmouth, MA. Also survived by nephews Mark and David Patterson, niece Julie McNamara and dear companion Sally Linden. John lived life fully to the very end. A resident of Wayland for nearly 50 years, John was as dear to his community as it was to him. Ever the iconoclast, John was as much known for his goofy hats, many pocketed pants, and love of off-road vehicles as he was for his great mind and ready humor. He is already sorely missed by all he touched. Services will be held at the First Parish in Wayland, 50 Cochituate Rd., Wayland at 2 PM on Friday, August 29th. Reception to follow immediately after the Service at the Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John's name to the Salvation Army, c/o Sharon Smith, 120 West 14th Street, New York, NY 10011. Arrangements under the direction of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home of WAYLAND.

I was a student in John's Harvard Business School course, Human Behavior in Organizations 46 years ago. That course and particularly his teaching changed the entire direction of my career and my life. I am deeply saddened by his passing.

Dear Marcia and Matt,
I was very saddened to hear of your father's recent death, as well as your Mom's several years ago. "Father" was dry-witted and very cool. It is my impression he lived a full and wonderful life. Please know I am thinking of you, and I hope you get some pleasure of thinking of your parents being together again.
lots of love, and God bless you.

I have always admired John Seiiler from our first meeting 45 years ago for both his community activism and independence of mind.

I met John during a construction project a few years ago. As details of John’s academic and professional life began to unfold during our time together, I could not help but marvel at his many accomplishments. Equally impressive to me, was his continued involvement in various organizations, community and otherwise, at his age. The aforementioned comments aside, the real passion for John, in my estimation, was his family and friends. Rarely does anyone come across somebody as genuine as John Seiler. John’s kindness, understanding and general zest for life will remain with me always.

Like his son, John Seiler sounds like a remarkably colorful man of many talents. I am sure he will be sadly missed. My condolences to the entire Seiler family.

I never met you but I had breakfast a table away from you at Grant's Camps the morning you died. I marveled how a guy with portable oxygen would be setting out on a boat on Kennebego Lake. It is a very beautiful spot where nature surrounds one and can make you feel you want to linger there for a long time. Bon Voyage.
