In addition to his dental practice, he provided dental services to the homeless of Boston through the Bridge Over Troubled Waters program for over ten years. He was a noted civil war historian, lecturer and benefactor to civil war battlefield preservation. Most notably, he was the driving force in restoring the First Massachusetts Cavalry's Battle of Aldie memorial in Snickersville, Virginia. Always on the leading edge, Dr. Ciano began running in the 1960's and completed the Boston Marathon in 1967 and 1968. According to his children, "Dad played a mean game of family touch football, especially during summers on Cape Cod". I am so sorry to hear this. Doc was a great cowboy and trooper who rode the blue hills for decades on Ashby, his ever 15 years old arabian mare. I had the pleasure of taking him horse riding to the howard hughes ranch and bonnie springs ranch outside of Las Vegas. We were friends for twenty years until I lost track of him around 2015. This is a heartbreak.

I will never forget all of the fun times and stories and meals that we shared during the time that we shared as daughter-in-law and father-in-law. I loved your cowboy spirit, your love of horses, your love of American civil war history and your love of striving and perserverance. You did it! Graduating from Harvard medical school, marrying
lovely Connie, establishing your dental practice, and raising your hard striving family brood. A dad always keepimg the flame for your beautiful children, Robert, Peter, Joseph, Maria and Christina.

God bless you and keep you. I sincerely hope there was a reunion and a happy loving joining of your soul's spirit with your son Peter. God speed, see you on the other side, Katherine

Dear Connie and family,I was just looking up their Milton address to send a few photos and saw this notice. So , so upset..tried a few times getting in touch with the family via phone. Joe and my late husband Cliff Young had a rare simpatico' relationship constantly joking with one another. Very, very special!I had hoped to visit with them more. They wanted me to come by again.Joe was an amazing person, so full of life. A truely happy man . When he gave a lecture on the Civil War his mind was such that he never needed notes. He could engage the audience completely with his charm, wit and extensive knowledge.I will miss him so much...his laugh and comments to me are inbetted in my mind.I will never forget Marie holding her iPhone to the mike at the Harvard Club for the' Celebration of Life' for Cliff to speak and recount a very funny incident they had at the Civil War Round Tables. The two were such characters together!
Love,
Lynne Young
