Commissioner Joe Jordan identified his "young tigers" shortly after taking over from Bob diGrazia in 1976. He is owed a great debt of gratitude for changing the written prom'l exam from 60% written, 40% t&e, to 80%-20% to give his young tigers a seat at the table. Among his 1978 class of Lieuts were Bill Bratton, Paul Evans, etc.
Joe took tremendous heat from the busing crisis which separated families in the City; and Joe Jordan truly epitomized all the exemplary comments by Mickey Roache cited earlier. Joe Jordan subsequently promoted eight "young tigers" to the Command Staff in October 1980 and the rest is history, initiated primarily with Joe's full support. Joe Jordan was Semper Fi to his family, friends, co-workers and the City of Boston and its Police Department. God Bless you and your family.

I was honored to serve under Boston Police Commissioner Joseph Jordan during a very difficult and challenging period for the City of Boston.
Commissioner Joseph Jordan responded swiftly and with courage and a deep concern for all residents of Boston to stem the racially motivated crime (Assaults, and Firebombings and Vandalism) that exploded in Boston' neighborhoods.
Commissioner Joseph Jordan is to be credited and praised for his professionalism and respect for all of Boston's residents regardless of race, and ethnicity.
God Bless Commissioner Joseph and his family.
Sincerely,
Francis "Mickey" Roache
