Dear Mackey Family,
I first met Joe when playing AAU baseball with his son Chris who to this day I consider a dear friend. As my coach, Joe gave me the guidance and confidence that proved to be invaluable to me as a teenager and beyond. Like he did for many others, Joe gave me a shot. This is something that I have never, and will never forget. For that, Joe will always hold a special place in my heart. When Joe ran for State Senate I was excited to be a part of his campaign. More importantly, I was honored to be a part of a campaign, supporting a man as caring, genuine, and sincere as Joe. Having gotten to know his wife Paula, and his kids Erin, Chris, and Alyssa, I realized what a great family man Joe was and what a great family they were. All of Joe’s kids have been successful in all they have done, and with great character. Joe and Paula, you must be very proud. They say the measure of a man is in his kids… Joe was top shelf.
To the entire Mackey family I want to express my deepest sympathies and condolences. May you find peace in all the lives that Joe has touched.
Rest in Peace, Joe. You will be missed.

On behalf of the Collins family of South Boston, we are saddened at Joe's untimely death. On so many occasions, on or near a baseball diamond, Joe's mentoring/parenting side was in full bloom and my sons, Andrew and Nicholas, were the lucky beneficiaries. The sports activity of his children, Chris, Erin and Alyssa, and their friends was his escape from law and politics, both grueling endeavors. For Paula and Joe, games provided a family social occasion that no gala or testimonial dinner could match in pure enjoyment. May we all learn how precious those days are and become, especially at a time like this. May Joe Mackey rest in peace in the knowledge that the time he gave not only to his family, but his friends and others, is greatly appreciated.
