Katherine TRUE Obituary

TRUE, Katherine Isabel Kate True--artist, activist, mother and treasured friend-passed away at her home on November 25. She was born in Burlington, Vermont on March 9, 1967, the daughter of Marshall True and Judith Yarnall.

Kate found her path early on. And though in the end breast cancer took away, much too early, her stamina to stand by the easel, we are gifted with the many decades in between, where her art -- www.katetrue.com --and life, flourished.

Kate received a B.A. with high honors in Studio Art from Wesleyan University and an M.F.A. in film from NYU. She was passionate about social justice, celebrating the resilience of women and people of color throughout her work. She was an arts entrepreneur, who promoted others' work, received grants for public art from the city of Boston and the MCC and presented packed workshops at the ICA. Her career, like her life, was enriched by many collaborations and co-curations. Kate's final solo-show "Stay True", revealed an expansive artist, working across multiple mediums and was celebrated with joy.

Kate possessed the courage to discern and pursue what she truly wanted, and the kindness to respect and nourish those whose paths intersected with hers. It was a privilege to walk with her.

Kate is survived by her cherished children, Nico, Julian and Tess Lepeska-True; her mother, Judith Yarnall; her sisters, Julia True and Anna Couperthwait; and her brothers, Adam and Steven True. She is also survived by her stepmother, Charon True; stepfather, Jon Yarnall; and her former husband, Peter Lepeska.

The family thanks deeply the Parlin Hospice Residence and Good Shepherd Hospice, as well as Kate's vibrant community, especially those closely involved in Kate's care.
