Dear Leo's family, I have been away from Boston for a long time, but I lived in Mission Hill and I attended JP. My brother John, who still lives there gave me a call about Leo. Leo has accomplished much with his life. A lot of times, people didn't expect us to do well, but look at him!!!! I wish to extend my sincerest condolences to the family. I am sorry to learn about the death of the Former Director of the Office of Minority Education, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dean Leo Osgood. I first met Leo during the last years of my matriculation, as a Ph.D. candidate at MIT. He was instrumental in convincing me to come back to MIT, as the Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Visiting Associate Professor of Chemistry during the 1997-1999 academic years.
During my tenure as a MLK Jr. Visiting Professor, I had the opportunity to have many discussions with Leo, and through our conversations and sometimes heated debates, I began to learn more about this caring complex man. One of his greatest heroes was the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and one of Leo’s goals was to contribute to the actualization of Dr. King’s vision of racial equality. Leo had a compassionate heart and cared deeply about the students. He worked hard to create an environment which promoted both their education and their understanding of community. He made many collaborative efforts toward that purpose and was tremendously successful in his endeavors — this is a part of his legacy.
I extend my sincere condolences to his: daughter, mother, sister and this entire host of family, loved ones and friends. I pray you will find comfort in knowing that he is safe in the arms of Our Heavenly Father.
May God continue to bless and keep you … and give you peace.
Sincerely,

Reverend Dr. Lynda Marie Jordan

My deepest heartfelt sympathies to Leo's family. Leo was my coach at MIT from 1987-91, and I served as an assistant coach under him in 1992. Coach was a wonderful man, and a father figure. He will be forever missed - and never forgotten.

In Memory of Leo Osgood

I had the privilege of playing against Leo when he was an outstanding guard at Northeastern University. From afar, I then had the good fortune of watching Leo lead a truly exemplary life.

On October 9, Leo was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. A worthy tribute to a great player and wonderful person.

I was very saddened to hear of Leo's passing. He was a teammate and our captain at Northeastern. We shared an apartment on Iriquois Street on Mission Hill with two other teammates during the 68-69 season. Leo was an excellent player, an even better teammate, and a very proud man. My deepest sympathy goes out to all of his family and friends.

He's gone too soon. Leo did so much for Northeastern University through the Black Alumni Association and by serving on the Board of the Alumni Association. Leo was dedicated to his students at MIT. Heartfelt condolences to his family ... may knowing that he made major contributions in whatever endeavor he tackled help to bring you solace during this difficult time.

Sending my prayers, love and condolences to the Osgood family. Leo was one of my father's good friends, and a wonderful God-Father who continued to encourage and motivate me until the very end. While I am saddened that we've lost a treasure here, I am thankful that he is no longer suffering and can rest in peace in heaven. He was truly a man of kindness, dedication, intelligence and compassion. I love you, Uncle Leo
Always,
Tuere (your God-daughter)

My deeptest sympathy goes out to Leo's family. I remember Leo as Director of the Minority Education Office at M.I.T.

My husband Kurt and I send our sincere condolences to Leo's family. We had the pleasure of knowing Leo during the early to mid 90's, when our son Keith had the great fortune of playing for Leo. Living in southern NH, gave us the opportunity to attend most home games and also road games. We saw over time what a great coach and teacher Leo was. He was not only interested in winning, but in bringing the team together. He took a personal interest in all of his players. I also liked the fact that he made them clean out their lockers on a regular basis! I have thought of Leo often over the years, and always sent a Christmas card. A couple of years ago, it was returned to me, so I figured he had retired and moved on. He made such a difference in our son's life. Peace to you, Leo. Sincerely, Joan & Kurt Whalen
