Our relationship goes back to the mid 1940's and it indeed was a memorable one. Lorraine was one of a
kind. Thoughts of her and her family will always bring a smile to my face. May her memory be for a blessing.

I just found out a few minutes ago that Mrs. Ruby's journey had ceased a few years back! She was one of my favorite teachers up at CHS, and ironically passed the same year my mom did! She was speaking of one of her daughter's, and retold the conversation that took place! I don't recall it word for word, but she said her daughter referred to her as "Mummy". Me being the wise cracker, jumped in with; Your daughter still calls you Mummy? She proceeded to shake her fist and mutter at me, in the fashion that Snoopy does to the Red Barron, which had the entire class in stitches! Another Irony is, I was a he only one of my mom's 10 Children who referred to her as "Mummy" until the day she passed. Mrs. Ruby also drew a great portrait of my older brother napping in a study class, that my mom, (not too thrilled about my brother napping in school) was in such awe of the drawing, that it was framed, and placed on her cabinet of treasures, and remained there up to her final days in her home! The only reason I would go to the new high school was to visit her, and when I got around to do another visit, I had herd she retired! Her spirit has to be very vibrant with your family, because it's very barite with me!

I just saw the notice of your Mom's passing. I graduated from Chelsea High School in 1970. Although I wasn't in her class we were on a school community action board together and she was a real advocate for every student in that school. A true educator and great lady.

Dear Amy:
I knew your mother very well; she was my teacher at Chelsea Senior High School in 1971. At that time, she taught a class in Mechanical Drawing. Mrs. Ruby encouraged me to draw, explore, learn and contribute to the school yearbook. She inspired me so much, that I minored in Art at college, even though I was a Science major. She inspired me so much that after graduation, I went back to school and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. She inspired me so much that I began a teaching career as an adjunct instructor at various community colleges for twenty years. In 1997, I was able to contact her through the Chelsea High School and she wrote me a hand written and heart felt letter. I called her and had a chance to tell her how she impacted my life and inspired me. It is often said, that some teachers teach, others show, but the best……inspire. May God bless.

Amy, I did not know your mother and I really do not know you but by email and being friends with Doyal and my sister Carol. I feel I have gotten to be friends by us emailing. I lost both parents and a brother and sister and 2 husbands so I know the hurt of losing someone you love. It takes a long time to get over it. Then out of the blue one day you will think of something you want to call to tell them, then you think, I can't do that.
You'll remember a happy time and cry because you'll not have those times again. The pain and hurt never goes away. Just remember the happy times you had, some will make you cry and some will make you laugh then some will you find your self talking to them. That is okay and find. I talk to them all of the time, they do hear you and see you and are smiling down on you just look up at night and they are winking at you.
God be with you always.

Please accept my humble condolences on the loss of your beloved mother. Mothers are special and it is always hard to say goodbye. But all of us who have lost a mother can take comfort in knowing that they have crossed over into a wondrous existence that we all have awaiting us. I shall pray for your courage to accept that which we cannot change and the strength to carry on.

Amy, Although I did not know your Mother, what a Mom she must have been to raise someone like you! She gave you so much courage, strength, wisdom and grace and with it, you have done so much. Breaking barriers in the military, flying to new heights that most woman have never dreamed of. I am sure she was so proud of you. I hope that as time passes, that when you think of her, the tears of your sorrow are replaced with smiles of wonderful times with her. Much love to you Amy.

On my very first day as a teacher at Chelsea High School, I felt anxious and alone as I watched everyone else on faculty greet one another warmly. Lorraine noticed me standing alone and extended herself to me, making me feel welcomed and like I was not alone. Over the years, I learned that that was just who she was: a talented and magnanimous person who always had a smile, time and energy for all of us, students and co-workers alike.

In senior year at Chelsea High, Miz Ruby marched me down to the office/guidance counselor, got my schedule switched to include her class, and encouraged me to apply to art schools. I will always be grateful. Sad at her passing, but such good memories!
