Dear Mrs. Decola, Cecilia and Maureen,
My brother Paul Sullivan informed me of the recent passing of Sam. My son in law, Justin Dowd grew to know Sam though his dealings at the bank where Justin was manager. He always entertained him with stories of the neighbor. So sorry for your loss. I'm sure he will be missed in the neighborhood.

I was saddened to hear of the news that Sam had passed away. I would often see him in Shaws picking up a few things and would ask how he was doing and to say hello to Celia. He would give you a word of advice and be on his way with a smile as he said goodbye. I came to know Sam and Celia through a mutual friend of theirs that I had worked for. Sammy would drop off a pecan pie and would give Celia the credit for it and say how blessed he was to have a wonderful woman in his life. He would never part with the recipe though I had asked him for it time and time again. I knew as the years had passed he was growing tired and would say how things were different now. Our mutual friend had passed at least 10 years ago (Helen) and her husband is in a senior home now, but I will always think of the kind and generous man that I had come to know and will keep his family in my prayers. May the good Lord ease your sorrow as the holidays approach. Your friend Bernice.

To the entire family I extend my deepest sympathy. Sam was a truly great man of whom you should all be very proud. He lived a good, long life. I first met Sam when I was a young lad with a News Tribune paper route which cover the area of the Monarch Diner. I used to bring them a newspaper every day and constantly going in there to get coffee for the Arena boys at the barber shop on the other block. "Those were the good ole days. " God Bless you Sam !

Pepsi, your joyful and loving life will always be an example to me as I try to live a life worth living. Many know the story of what you did for our family, but it was not only that which had a profound impact on me. You took me in while I was a student and fed me your incredible home-cooked meals. During each visit, I would watch as you expressed your love for your soulmate Cecilia and enjoyed life's simple pleasures like growing tomatoes. I have always been inspired by the life you lived and I hope to carry forth your beautiful outlook through my own life.
Love,
David and Sabaa

I'll offer my family's condolences on Mr. Decola's passing. We lived around the corner on Rose Hill Way from their home on Farnum Rd. I remember that my younger sister was a friend of Mr. Decola's daughter, Cecilia.
Reading Mr. Decola's obituary took me back to the many conversations I had with my dad about his experiences during World War II. Our father, also included here at the Joyce site, passed at age 93 in 2012.
My family's very best wishes to all the Decolas,
Paul Sullivan

Sam, thank you for your service to this country and to being a kind-hearted and compassionate human being. It was a privilege to know you and your beautiful bride. May your good soul be at the right hand of God and may your fellow comrades and those who benefited from your generosity welcome you to your eternal home in heaven. Till we meet again, Rest in Peace.
